Description Steve Fanning 2020-09-02 12:56:00 UTC
Description:
I am aware that there may be some desire for commonality across components of LibreOffice. However, I am concerned about the usability of the TSCP Classification toolbar within Calc and feel it would benefit from a review by the LibreOffice Design and User Experience team.

My general understanding is that toolbars are most useful for frequently used tools, so that access to the tool is readily available through a single click on a toolbar icon. I am not an expert on applying classification to a spreadsheet but it seems reasonable to assume that it isn’t a frequent activity.

In Calc, the default configuration of the TSCP Classification toolbar only offers one tool – a drop-down Level menu for selecting one of the four available classification options (see attachment). To classify a Calc document you must:

1.Go to View > Toolbars > TSCP Classification to open the toolbar
2.Select the appropriate option on the toolbar
3.Go to View > Toolbars > TSCP Classification to close the toolbar (to avoid it occupying unnecessary screen space)

Would it be more user-friendly if the classification level options were available somewhere on the Menu bar (perhaps in the File menu)? This would make the toolbar redundant and perhaps it could be removed from Calc?

TSCP Classification toolbar in Calc, with menu open
Comment 2 Miklos Vajna 2020-09-02 13:34:07 UTC
I imagine that most users are in one of two groups:

1) Ones who are interested in classification: they open the toolbar once and then they are fine with the screen space it requires.

2) Ones who are not interested and never open the toolbar.

From what I heard, popular classification plugins for MSO have a similar behavior, that lead to the current UI.

But of course, if there is a better way to present the functionality and somebody wants to do the work of implementing those ideas, I'm not objecting.

TSCP Writer vs Calc

(In reply to Miklos Vajna from comment #2)
> they open the toolbar once

That's what Steve had in mind. You do not need the toolbar to change the classification. TBs are suited for frequently used functions not one-shot interactions. The alternative is a (sub-)menu Classification or a selection under File > Properties > Security.

The same applies to Writer too but we have two function on the toolbar that makes it less striking there.

I agree with Steve, there is no use case why a classification needs to be done frequently. So we better provide access to the function via dialog and ditch the toolbar.

I don't mind either way; Cor: please speak up if you have strong opinions. :-)
