Description Stephen Smith 2020-10-02 01:13:20 UTC
Description:
This is the first time that I have experienced this problem in ten years. Today, I opened an existing spreadsheet file and it takes a very long time (two to three minutes) to open. I receive an error message "LibreOffice Calc is not responding".
I am running the Ubuntu 20.04LTS operating system with the newest version of LibreOffice suite on a HP Pavilion dv7 laptop with 16GB RAM and a 750GB SSD. Today, I backed up my data files using the Ubuntu Backups utility app as I always do every Thursday. Normally, files open with in 20 seconds. I have done nothing different than I have done for the last ten years. I know my way around LibreOffice Calc. I think that there was a recent update to my computer a couple of days ago. I do not know if the problem is with Ubuntu or LibreOffice updates. I never had this problem with Ubuntu 18.04LTS and the respective LibreOffice suite.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Open file from File manager.
2.Takes 60 seconds to show spreadsheet, but cursor is locked up and doesn't move.
3.After about 2 minutes, the cell location box will move with cursor arrows, but will lockup after moving approximately 40 rows. Mouse pointer is ineffective. Program is locked up and unresponsive. This time there is no Error Message.

Actual Results:
I use File manager to find an existing spreadsheet file. Open the file. File will take an excessive time to open. After opening, various basic features on the menu bar are inaccessible. Cursor will freeze in one location and will not move.

Expected Results:
I expect the spreadsheet to do basic functions

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

Additional Info:
This problem just happened to me today. Never happened before. I suspect a recent software upgrade suggested by Ubuntu. Maybe a recent LibreOffice upgrade.
Tried to open an existing file again. File opened after 45 seconds. I can change cell locations, but I cannot edit the contents of the cell. After 4 1/2 minutes, I receive the error message "LibreOffice Calc is not responding".

Please try Menu/Help/Restart in Safe Mode.

Comment 3 Stephen Smith 2021-04-01 16:24:22 UTC
I gave up because I was disgusted with the performance of the new Libre Office Calc. I never should have had to open up Calc in Safe mode. I removed the entire Ubuntu 20.04 operating system along with Libre Office 6 suite off my computer. I reverted back to Ubuntu 18.04 with its Libre Office 5 suite.
I did create a problem in that the last backup that I made was under Ubuntu 20.04. When I tried to restore all my files after reinstalling Ubuntu 18.04, the Backup utility could not recognize the files on my backup USB drive.
I had to learn how to create cryptic Terminal commands for the Duplicity backup utility. I was able to restore 95% of all my files.
Now that I am back using Ubuntu 18.04 and Libre Office Calc 5, my spreadsheets are working flawlessly.
This is the first time that an upgrade from Libre Office had negatively affected me. I may never trust your upgrades again. I know that Ubuntu upgrades are not trust worthy. Again, I was so unhappy with your support that I decided to revert backwards. Best decision that I have made in a while.
