Description nj 2020-10-13 01:41:52 UTC
Description:
In Writer, I see the spell check window, showing pretty much nothing, overlaid by a window containing the boggling question, 'Continue checking at the beginning of the document?'

In this report I specify the OS as 'Linux' because that is the only OS on which I have experienced the problem - but I use Writer only only on Linux.)

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Enter a paragraph or two of text containing nothing the spell check will flag.
2. Place the caret at the end of that text and thus at the end of the document.
3. Press F7

Actual Results:
I see the spell check window, showing pretty much nothing, overlaid by a window containing the question, 'Continue checking at the beginning of the document?'

I will attach a screenshot if I can see how to.

Expected Results:
Either (1) Writer should check the whole text, or, if for some reason you think it better to check only from the caret, then (2) Writer should make it clear to the user that no spelling errors were found from *the current point in the document onwards.*

Do not: (i) show the user a window that seems to convey nothing; (ii) overlay the window of *i* with another window so the user cannot properly see the first window anyway; (iii) ask a question that the user will not understand. Also - while I am at it - what is the point of not closing the (main) spell check window, once the spell check is (in one way or another) complete? Further, seeing, 'Text language: none' confuses as well, especially since, for some reason, that string does not appear until one dismisses any of the small 'question' windows.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

Additional Info:
In recent versions of Microsoft Word, the spell check has become horrible. Yet, even today's Word does a better job in the situation at issue than does Writer. So, for a more detailed idea of how to handle the matter better, see Word.

I can't confirm it with

Version: 7.0.3.1 (x64)
Build ID: d7547858d014d4cf69878db179d326fc3483e082
CPU threads: 4; OS: Windows 10.0 Build 19042; UI render: Skia/Raster; VCL: win
Locale: de-DE (de_DE); UI: en-GB
Calc: CL

I recieve a message "The spell chekc is complete." (as expected)

Could you please try to reproduce it with the latest version of LibreOffice from https://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/ ? I have set the bug's status to 'NEEDINFO'. Please change it back to 'UNCONFIRMED' if the bug is still present in the latest version. Change to RESOLVED WORKSFORME, if the problem went away.
