Created attachment 168451 [details] illustration hi, there is a problem -- "ambiguity" :) -- about using templates, and the templates menu entries.... first of all, we should decide what it is what we do when we "open a template"... two approaches are possible: A: open a template, an .OTT document, which we can edit B: create a new document based on the given template... personally, I'd "vote" for A, but I can live with B too, only I'd like to have only one of these approaches in use... :) - - - what happens in reality: (case #1) you go: File / Templates / Open Template --- and you'll have opened a template, a .OTT file, and you can edit it... (this is, obviously, approach A) however... (case #2) you go: File / Templates / Manage Templates and you double click one... and bang, you'll have created a new document based on that template... which is approach B moreover: (case #3) if you go: File / Templates / Manage Templates ... and select one, and click "open"... you'll have, again, crated a new document based on that template... however: (case #4) if you go: File / Templates / Manage Templates and right click, you'll see strange options! OPEN and EDIT... as we know, open in this context means "new from this template"... whereas "EDIT" means what one will think it means... (open the template for editing) ....................... suggestion: #1 in the "manage templates" window... OPEN should be abolished... replaced with "EDIT"... #1 / B in the "manage templates" window... there could be another item: "New from template"... or "New doc"... #2 in the "Files / Templates" menu's dropdown... "Open Template" should mean what it means (opening a template for editing).. but it should be perhaps labelled as "Open a template" (cause next you'll see a list of templates, and also because "open a template" makes it clear that there is NO template selected in the context... it is just about opening "a" template... #3 in the "Files / Templates" menu's dropdown... there could be a new item: open this doc's template... since this is the leftmost dropdown, it will comfortable fit any screen, so adding "this doc's" won't make a bad difference :) - - - thank you for developing Libreoffice ... & Merry winter fests! - - - PS: you only have to look at the dropdown in the "manage templates" window... to see that there is a conflict .. cause "edit" and "open" basically mean the same..
(In reply to peter josvai from comment #0) > you go: File / Templates / Open Template --- and you'll have opened a > template, a .OTT file, and you can edit it... Yes > (case #2) > you go: File / Templates / Manage Templates That opens Template Dialog > (case #3) > if you go: File / Templates / Manage Templates ... > and select one, and click "open"... you'll have, again, crated a new > document based on that template... I agree, that this should be improved. Creating a new document based on a template is not part of managing templates > (case #4) > File / Templates / Manage Templates > and right click, you'll see strange options! > OPEN and EDIT... > as we know, open in this context means "new from this template"... > whereas "EDIT" means what one will think it means... (open the template for > editing) I also agree, that this could be improved cc: Design-Team for further input and decision for case 3 and 4
Manage Templates is a dialog that lists template files from different sources. It includes shipped documents that are stored at read-only folders and therefore you don't overwrite with Save but create a new document. If you add some template to the dialog it behave like Open. The issue has been reported before in bug 123178 pointing to bug 104074. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 104074 ***
