Expect:
="Hello" & Char(9) & "World"
creates a String with a tabulator between Hello and World

Discovered:
There is no space between the two words

Did you try to copy&paste the cell content created by ="Hello" & Char(9) & "World"  into a text editor? The tab character is in the string created by the formula, but obviously tabulators do not exist within calc cells.
