OK, I could see some use for a word count metric by section/chapter. @Jim perhaps a 'Properties' context entry for elements in the 'Content Navigation View' mode of Navigator?
Either a 'Properties...' entry in the Headings context menu used to display an info dialog containing word/character count info or perhaps a tool tip similar to the one that appears when the mouse pointer is placed over a section entry. It's a good hack for learning a bit about the document model, particularly the outline nodes, also the content tree in the Navigator and more.
It could simply be displayed at the bottom line under the text, where it is displayed at the moment. I could imagine, that when I click on a heading the count is displayed. At the moment the count is always the full document. There must however be a way to display the total count.
Multiple heading can be selected in the 'Outline Content Navigation View' mode. Then right click to display the context menu and choose Select. The word count for the selection made will show in the status bar word count area. From the Help for version 7.2 - If you only want to view the entries in a certain category, select the category and click the Content View icon. Until you click the icon again, only the objects of this category will be displayed. The Content View icon is the first icon in the second row tools area above the content tree.

Something more?
Thanks for the clue Stuart I can select one heading and then select and see count I can't select multiple headings When I select a heading with sub-headings only the the actual lenth of the heading is counted but not the content with all its sub-headings
(In reply to all.online from comment #7) > Thanks for the clue Stuart > I can select one heading and then select and see count > I can't select multiple headings > When I select a heading with sub-headings only the the actual lenth of the > heading is counted but not the content with all its sub-headings Selection in the collapsed state will include all 'hierarchically' children objects in the counts. When uncollapsed the counts are for just the one selected object. The + icon shows there are included objects collapsed, the - icon shows tree is fully expanded, and selection/count would be just each object.
Then the requested feature is already implemented. Thanks Stuart for the tip!
No, no. Thanks to Jim for doing the heavy lifting on bug 38093! A gift that keeps on...
Created attachment 169030 [details] Headings 'Content Navigation View' mulitiple selection word count demo This demo isn't really about the Headings tool tip seen displaying the word/character count info but about how to access the 'Headings Content Navigation View' to be able to select multiple Headings using Shift and Ctrl mouse clicks. Keyboard multiple selection also works using Shift + Up/Down Arrow. I wish I would have hovered over the 'Content Navigation View' button long enough for it to show the tool tip 'Content Navigation View'
