Description Gilles Braud 2021-01-22 23:45:25 UTC
Description:
Hello,

A great thank you for all the features available in LibreOffice, completed and improved over the years.

Here is my request for evolution :
In the "help" tab of a Writer or Calc app etc.. , click on "show the tip of the day" to display a window that contains the tip of the day, with the "next" button.

Could you add :
the "previous" button
the "first tip" button
the "last tip" button
the "Download all tips" button

Sincerely
and a beautiful, peaceful day
and best wishes for the New Year 2021

Steps to Reproduce:
1.In the "help" tab of a Writer or Calc app etc.. , click on "show the tip of the day" to display a window that contains the tip of the day, with the "next" button.
2. unfortunately, there is only the "next" button

Actual Results:
unfortunately, there is only the "next" button in the window "show the tip of the day"

Expected Results:
Could you add :
the "previous" button
the "first tip" button
the "last tip" button
the "Download all tips" button

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

Additional Info:
In the "help" tab of a Writer or Calc app etc.. , click on "show the tip of the day" to display a window that contains the tip of the day, with the "next" button.

Heiko, what do you think?

Very glad to see people enjoying the dialog. Feel free to help us with more tips or nice illustrations (the image left-hand can be done per tip; animated gifs are possible too).

I deliberately decided against the Back function (and never thought about First/Last) because this clutters the simple dialog. However, Back is easy to realize and with good arguments - could also be more people requesting, I'd do it (but not First/Last). Keeping the ticket open for this.

Download is definitely out of scope. But we could prepare a wiki page with all the content.

Was looking on Bugzilla to create the same enhancement request, specifically about a "Back" button.
A few times, I was reading tips of the day, pressed "Next" and straight away wanted to go back because I thought I misread something.

A place to see all tips in one go would be handy. Wondering how a wiki page would be generated, as the list is specific to the LO branch. Would there be one wiki page per version, or just one from the latest one?
Such list of "rendered" tips (as opposed to just the source code in https://opengrok.libreoffice.org/xref/core/cui/inc/tipoftheday.hrc ) would not only allow users to do a quick search of a topic (for example to find a tip they had seen previously), but it would also allow contributors to quickly see what the tip looks like in production without having to click on the "Next" button potentially more than 200 times. (I just did that to get to the UI tip, the first one, to verify bug 137607).

I agree however that the other buttons proposed in by Gilles might only add clutter to the dialogue, and be too specific. If an automatically generated list of tips is available on the wiki, those buttons would be superfluous anyway.

So I would vote for:
- "Previous Tip" button to the left of the existing "Next Tip" button;
- "See all tips" button or blue link.

Heiko, a kind reminder of this button for Back.
Thanks.

> I deliberately decided against the Back function...

I will not implement this function. But it's easy to do for anyone else.
