Description: When opening a spreadsheet in CALC, all words are underlined in red as if wrong in the spell check. You can do a manual spell check, then the respective cell looks correct afterwards. However, after re-opening the file the same picture shows up again. The automatic spell check does not seem to work properly (it does work still in Version 7.0.4!) Steps to Reproduce: 1.Open a spreadsheet with text included in cells 2. You will find every word marked as "wrong" (underlined in red) by the automatic spell check. 3. You can do a manual spell check, which works properly. The respctive cells lools ok afterwards. 4. but after saving / re-opening the file all words are marked again as wrong (all tested in German version) Actual Results: with automatic spell check enabled, all words are marked as incorrect Expected Results: Automatic spell check should recognize words written correctly as correct. Reproducible: Always User Profile Reset: No Additional Info: n.a.
I can't repro. Version: 7.1.0.3 (x64) / LibreOffice Community Build ID: f6099ecf3d29644b5008cc8f48f42f4a40986e4c CPU threads: 4; OS: Windows 10.0 Build 21296; UI render: Skia/Raster; VCL: win Locale: es-ES (es_ES); UI: en-US Calc: CL Please test with a clean profile Menu/Help/Restart in Safe Mode
I did as you asked for... But no change: the automatic spellcheck is still not working properly. Be aware that the language is set to "German". regards Volker
let me add that I downgraded back to Version 7.0.4, which works fully correctly.

Which further info is required? I cannot give anything more than already stated! I did, as requested, check the issue in safe mode, to ensure that there is no corrupted user profile. However, the issue remained. So we have my experience of an issue and the comment from developer, that he can't reproduce the issue - contradicting experience.
I'm not a dev, but as QA testing bugs. Please attach a sample where it happens to you, and detail what it's exactly the German you have selected for UI, for local settings and default for documents. Or better attach and screenshot of Menu/Tools/Options/Language settings/Languages.
Created attachment 169523 [details] Please find attached the requested screenshot of the language settings!
Created attachment 169526 [details] Screenshoot of language configuration. I cannot reproduce the problem with your same configuration. What more can I do? Of course I checked first the language setting in the file, even before ever mentioning this issue. Secondly: as mentioned, the same file works correctly with LibreOffice 7.0.4 (or also Microsoft Excel), so it can not be a problem with the language setting in the file. I will try to experiment further...
Let me add some further information after subsequent tests 1) I figured out, that not every cell shows the issue that the automatic spell-check does not work; in some cells it is correct. However, I could not identify any specific difference why it works in some cells and not others 2) The "whole text" is set to language -> German. I also checked single cells - all correct. 3) When I edit a cell (just ad some letter, which also can be removed afterwards) the spell-check is ok. I can as well go into a cell and just look at the format of a single letter, which shows "German" as language. After having done so, the whole cell looks correct. However, after saving / re-opening of the file the problem is there again. 4) I checked with several files containing tect - same issue.
Created attachment 169531 [details] Sample file I saw during further investigation, that some files work, some do not. Attached is a file, that shows in some cells, that correctly written words are underlined in red, e.g. cells A3, A5, A8, A9, B9... Other cells like A4, B3, B4, B5, B6, B7 are correct (i.e. when something is underlined here in red, this makes sense)
I just checked the latest release 7.1.1.2. Unfortunately, the same (wrong) behaviour as described occurs in this version. It is disappointing to get no replies since weeks and the status of this bug report is still "unconfirmed", despite having sent sample files showing the bug.
We are mainly volunteers helping to triage the issues, if I can't reproduce it, then I can't, then no other way than to wait for someone else that can reproduce the problem.
Ok, I assume you tried with the file I sent, did you? Causey as described, The problem occurs in some files but not in others... However, I never got a reply whether this was checked or not. I am not sure what the provess is and whether someone else tries to follow up, if you can't reproduce the issue. I can only confirm, that everything is ok in version 7.0.4, but not in 7.1, evem the latest 7.1.1.2
By the way: I just updated from version 7.04 (to which I reverted due to the described bug) to 7.0.5.2. I can confirm, that the described error does NOT occur in this version, only from 7.1 on.
today I tried Version 7.1.2.2. Apparently nobody notices the reported bug, it is still there.
Meanwhile version 7.1.5 became the version for "conservative users" - and the bug described by myself still remains. Am I the only one recognizing this? I used a freshly installed version, so no potential garbage from previous ones, and I can still reproduce the issue, that the automatic spellcheck shows the conten of many cells as incorrect, while in fact it is correct. After going through the spellcheck the cell is shown as correct, but with the next loading the game starts again. Very disappointing.
Confirmed with LO 7.2.1.0+ under Ubuntu 20.04. The conditions to trigger the bug are: - the text in the cell has direct formatting and/or - there is a line break in the text. Status set to new. Best regards. JBF
Keyword regression added because it works as expected in 7.0. Best regards. JBF
I would like to bibisect this issue, but I need help. If I install https://extensions.libreoffice.org/en/extensions/show/german-de-de-frami-dictionaries into a bibisect repo, I can see it is working. However, with attachment 169531 [details] I am not seeing the problem 'You will find every word marked as "wrong"' in any cell. This is on Linux (all VCL backends). Please advise.
It is weird, because I *do* see the problem now in my master build. I don't see it in 7.1, 7.2 and 7.3 repos. In those, it underlines some words that are to be expected.
*** Bug 144042 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
Since this is a regression not bibisected yet, I'd like to mention bug 143161 that I reported, about a very similar issue -- red wavy line indicating spelling error for Chinese text (which don't even have a spellchecker) when the text contains a line break. That bug is also a regression in 7.1 series (7.0 is good), and already bibisected (to a range, but with an obvious suspect).
I think I managed to fix it in attachment 169526 [details]. 1. Select all text in cell. Don't select CELL, but TEXT in cell! 2. Menu 'Format' -> 'Character...' -> 'Font' tab 3. Click 'Reset' button (lower right corner, near 'Cancel' 4. Click 'OK" I had the same problem with direct formatted 'superscript' text. When I change 'superscript' to 'normal' red lines are off. AND this happens ONLY with EXCEL .xlsx files. My system is: Linux Mint 20.2 Version: 7.2.2.2 / LibreOffice Community Build ID: 20(Build:2) CPU threads: 2; OS: Linux 5.4; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3 Locale: en-US (en_US.UTF-8); UI: en-US Ubuntu package version: 1:7.2.2~rc2-0ubuntu0.18.04.1~lo1 Calc: threaded Sorry about my English!
I can confirm that the issue still exist in 7.2.2.2 64 bit. Any Calc cell with German as language and a line break in it shows most words underlined as wrongly written even if they are not. The underlining disappears if you edit the text in the cell but it appears again on if you open the document again. The workaround in comment 24 seems really to work. Although I hope that it will be really fixed some when.
The Issue is still not solved in version 7.3 - what a pity, as it is known since long and wasn't an issue in 7.0.
Only for the sake of completeness: Still REPRODUCIBLE (as percomment 18) with sample file 2021-02-06 16:23 UTC, Volker Strönisch (and my own ones) and Server Installation of Version: 7.4.0.0.alpha0+ (x64) Build ID c856f9bec12d98ed49f01578ded79f16ae7be051 CPU threads: 12; OS: Windows 10.0 Build 19042; UI render: Skia/Raster; VCL: win Locale: de-DE (de_DE); UI: en-US | Calc: CL | Auto Colibre Theme | Special devUserProfile
I think the Issue is resolved in Version: 7.3.3.2 / LibreOffice Community Build ID: 30(Build:2) CPU threads: 2; OS: Linux 5.4; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3 Locale: en-US (en_US.UTF-8); UI: en-US Ubuntu package version: 1:7.3.3~rc2-0ubuntu0.18.04.1~lo1 Calc: threaded Please confirm!
No longer reproducible with Installation of Version: 7.3.3.2 (x64) Build ID: d1d0ea68f081ee2800a922cac8f79445e4603348 CPU threads: 12; OS: Windows 10.0 Build 19044; UI render: Skia/Raster; VCL: win Locale: de-DE (de_DE); UI: de-DE | Calc: threaded | ElementaryTheme | My normal User Profile In the morning I worked with 7.3.2.2, problem visible in all spreadsheets with comment #18 conditions. Now in last half hour not seen the problem in any of the spreadsheets from the morning.
Thanks, I can confirm (as originator of this bug), that the issue seems to be solved with version 7.332! Well done!
