LO opening file incorrectly

URGENT
This file opening bug needs urgent attention.
It is an intermittent fault that is now happening more often.
I have deleted and reinstalled LO 7.1.0.3 several times now.
Reinstalling LO cures the problem for a short time, but the file opening and lack of zoom control returns after using LO about four times.
I am a Technical Writer creating LO user guides so I have to operate the latest version of the software.
I am operating macOS 11.2.1 on a Mac Mini 2019 model.
Comment 3 PeeWee 2021-02-20 11:21:44 UTC
After further testing using my Mac Mini (BigSur macOS 11.2.1) and MacBook Pro (Catalina macOS 10.16.7), this file opening problem and zoom not functioning looks like an incompatibility problem with the latest version of macOS, which is BigSur macOS 11.2.1.
This file opening problem and zoom not functioning appears to work OK on Catalina macOS 10.16.7. This version of macOS is the latest version of 10.16 before version 11 was released by Apple.
Hope this info helps in solving this problem.

Writer file not opening correctly

I have just installed LibreOffice 7.1.1 on my Mac Mini (2020 model) running macOS Big Sur 11.2.2. The problem of files not opening correctly and the zoom function not working has not been corrected in this version. I have attached a screenshot of the problem.

The screenshot shows a new Writer document created from the Welcome screen. This problem also happens when creating a new Calc spreadsheet.

Impress, Drawing and Math open correctly at the moment, but this was only a brief test.

Base stopped LibreOffice from responding.

This is an URGENT problem and needs a solution.

I restarted in LO safe mode.
Opened a Writer file and changed the zoom. The problem reappeared.
Restarted LO in normal mode and reopened the file I am working on. The Writer file opened normally and the zoom function worked normally.
I will now continue to work in LO 7.1.1 on my Mac Mini and see if the problem reappears.
DO NOT close the bug yet, until I have tested LO 7.1.1 for at least a week.

Starting in LO safe mode does not work.

I opened Draw to create a new illustration. The new file opened in the same fashion as the Writer screenshot attached to this bug report. Also, the zoom function did not work.

I restarted LO in safe mode, but the result was the same as the screenshot.

I think there is a compatibility problem between LO and macOS Big Sur and needs investigating.
Comment 10 steve 2021-03-08 10:32:36 UTC
This is indeed a very odd problem, but I can assure you it is not a general LO / macOS 11 Big Sur problem as many users are not experiencing this problem, suggesting it is limited to your specific setup.

Could you uninstall LibreOffice and reinstall 7.1.1.2. Ideally use an uninstaller like the free AppCleaner to get rid of all preferences files.

Does Libreoffice then open as expected?

And if it does not, could you install LibreOffice nightly build and see if the problem persists using that build:
https://dev-builds.libreoffice.org/daily/master
Comment 11 PeeWee 2021-03-14 09:57:34 UTC
This problem only occurs when LibreOffice 7.1 is installed.

I have removed all LibreOffice files using AppCleaner and searching for LibreOffice manually.

I have tried installing the nightly builds, but my macOS system will NOT allow an LO nightly build to be installed. The reason being is that there is no security certificate that macOS recognizes as safe.

LibreOffice 7.1 works as normal on my Ubuntu Virtual Machine running through Parallels on my Mac Mini with macOS 11.2.3.

LibreOffice 7.1 also works as normal on my MacBook Pro running macOS 10.16 Catalina and on my small Windows notebook running Windows 10 Home.

LibreOffice 7.0.5 is now installed, everything works as normal.

I can only assume that there is an incompatibility problem between LO 7.1 and macOS 11.2.3. This needs inverstigating.

Comment 14 PeeWee 2021-03-16 15:48:23 UTC
I have managed to install a nightly build of LibreOffice 7.2 and open LibreOffice.

LibreOffice stops responding immediately and I cannot use LibreOffice. I have repeated the removal and reinstallation of LibreOffice with the same result.

I have also removed and reinstalled LibreOffice 7.1 several times and still get the same result. Files do not open correctly and the zoom function does not work as reported for this bug.

LibreOffice 7.0.5 works perfectly and will continue to use until this problem is solved.

I can test LibreOffice 7.1 using Ubuntu operating system in a virtual machine on my Mac Mini and on a small notebook running Windows 10 Home.

Why does macOS Big Sur like LibreOffice 7.1???
Comment 15 steve 2021-03-17 11:45:15 UTC
So when you say LibreOffice stops responding, does it crash? Do you see it marked as not responding when you press alt+cmd+esc?

If that is the case and you force quit LibreOffice do you then see a crash log? If yes, please save the crash log to a txt file and attach it to this bug report.
Comment 16 PeeWee 2021-03-18 11:22:24 UTC
The nightly build of LO 7.2 dows not crash.
It stops responding as soon as you try to work on an open LO Writer file.
I have left LO in this not responding state for 30 minutes.
All I can do is force shutdown.
There is no crash report.
I have now unistalled LO 7.2 and re-installed LO 7.0.5, which works perfectly on my Mac Mini.

I am using macOS 11.2.3 Big Sur on a Mac Mini 2020 model.
I also use a MacBook Pro 2012 model using macOS Catalina and LibreOffice 7.1 has no problems in operating.
The problem is between macOS 11.2.3 and LO 7.1.

I guess this was confirmed with Comment 18 but that user is not in CC.
So only the reporter can test again in newer LO.

Please retest with and without Skia in Options-View.
Comment 23 PeeWee 2022-07-27 10:14:14 UTC
What is Skia?

I am a Technical Writer creating the Impress User Guide.

> What is Skia?

Skia is a graphics engine that LibreOffice makes use of. It allows to render the UI with the graphics processing unit of your computer.

If you copy the version info from your Help - About window and paste it here, we can all learn, if you have Skia active.
Comment 25 Alex Thurgood 2022-07-28 09:45:41 UTC
@PeeWee : are you using a window manager extension, e.g. something like Rectangle?

These are known to sometimes cause issues with LO displays.

Other than that, I downloaded the current IMpress Guide 7.2 and opened it in Writer

Version: 7.3.5.2 / LibreOffice Community (Arm silicon compiled version)
Build ID: 184fe81b8c8c30d8b5082578aee2fed2ea847c01

Calc: threaded

No display problem at all similar to what you are describing, at 100% zoom, so not reproducible for me, I'm afraid.
Comment 26 PeeWee 2022-07-28 09:54:39 UTC
Hello Alex

Not using a windows manager. Have no need for one with two displays.

This zoom problem is for Impress and Draw 7.4 for LO7.4 when used in macOS 12.4 Monterey running on a Mac Mini with Intel silicon.

@PeeWee: Could you install LibreOffice nightly build and see if the problem persists using that build:
https://dev-builds.libreoffice.org/daily/

Note for testers: the nightly master builds install in /Applications/LibreOfficeDev.app. These builds are not codesigned like regular LibreOffice releases so you will need to execute the following Terminal command after installation but before you launch /Applications/LibreOfficeDev:

xattr -d com.apple.quarantine /Applications/LibreOfficeDev.app

Which version of macOS are you running now?
Comment 28 PeeWee 2024-02-25 09:29:09 UTC
This bug was submitted 3 years ago.
I am now running macOS Sonoma 14.3.1 on a 2018 Mac Mini Intel.
I am now using LibreOffice 24.2.
Do not have any problem opening files or with the zoom function.
