Description Lucas J 2021-02-15 15:14:20 UTC
Description:
In Microsoft word, there is support for inking, in which the user can draw freeform lines with their mouse or a stylus. LibreOffice does not seem to support this yet, however, it does support various line drawing tools such as "Freeform line" or "Line" which in theory could be an effective substitute for inking.
While it is already possible to change the lines to make them dashed, have different thicknesses, and have different colors, there are not any options to add special effects such as those present in MS Word.
In MS word, the user can make their freeform lines appear as a rainbow gradient with sparkles, and they can change the shape of the line to make it act as if it is a highlighter, pen, marker, etc.

Please make it such that the user can make their lines appear as a custom gradient of their choice with more than 2 colors. For example, a gradient that changes from blue to purple to green, etc.
Please also add support to add special effects on these lines, customizable by the user, such as sparkles or crayon-like texture.
Please add support to change the transparency of the lines so they can function as highlights.
If these features are added, existing features should still work. For example, if the user made a dashed line, the line should still appear dashed.

Thank you for reading and I hope this is implemented.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Select Freeform line button
2. Draw the line
3. Change style to "dashed"
4. Change colors

Actual Results:
Few options available

Expected Results:
Expect to see options to change transparency, gradient colors, special effects

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

Additional Info:
May be difficult to implement due to ODF file format, but a workaround might be turning the lines into images behind-the-scenes.

Transparency is already available. Menu Format > Line (in Draw), tab Line.

Multicolor gradient is a missing ODF feature, which needs to be implemented. It is missing in shape filling already.

As workaround to get such drawing, you can draw a thick line, then convert it to Contour, and then fill it with a bitmap.

Could you please describe, where I can find "inking" in MS Office? An please add a document that uses it. The question is, whether that are still lines or they are silently converted to filled shapes.

Editing should be enabled in MS Word, or fancy effects may not display in the document

@Lucas J: Thank you for the attachments. I have found it now.

The feature wish for inking capabilities is already in bug 35092, see my comment there. So the "ink"-related parts of the request will not be tracked here.

The feature wish for gradients with more than two colors is tracked in bug 76682 for OOXML compatibility and in bug 48392 for the missing implementation of the already in ODF specified multicolor gradients. "Multicolor gradient"-related parts of the request will not be tracked here.

This bug report is then for the gradient enhancement for the stroke of shapes. MS Office allows gradients on strokes. So it would be a good enhancement to be able to show and edit them in LibreOffice. Such feature requires an addition to the ODF file format. Therefore the urgent request to interested developers: Before you start implementing such a feature, discuss with the ODF TC at OASIS what is the best way to include it in the file format.
Bug 96533 has a similar request, but covers only the gradient of the stroke of a text box.

@Lucas J: Are there other requests, which are not covered by the above list? If yes, please write a new enhancement request. Each bug report should track exactly one issue.

I changed the title to reflect the changes. I hope this is OK.

If you will take those from your wish list, the bug report would be duplicate to bug 35092 and would be closed as duplicate.

Therefore I have suggested to keep the bug report for the missing feature of gradients for strokes.

As discussed with the reporter, I set this to duplicate to a new version of his request in bug 144525.
