Screenshot of page layout dialog in Word

Word indicates the page gutter area in the preview on the page layout dialog, see attached screenshot. I think, that is a good idea and LibreOffice should show the page gutter margin area in a similar way in the preview.

We discussed this idea in the design meeting and have no objection to go with the MSO-like solution of hatches for the gutter.
