Description Orwel 2021-03-24 14:16:22 UTC
Description:
Text highlighted in Writer is not exported correctly to MS Office format (.doc, .docx).

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Higlight some text in Writer
2. Save the text as a/.odt file, b/.doc file, c/.docx file
3. Open the documents in Writer and MS OFFICE 2019 - the results are not the same.

Actual Results:
highlight could not be cleared in MS Office 2019 - you can change the color of the highlight, but if you choose in MS O19 Menu-Home-Text Highlight Color-No color, the highlight does not dissaper. The same if you open the .doc file.

See 3 attached files.

Expected Results:
highlight should be possible to clear in MS Office 2019

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: Yes

Additional Info:
Years ago i remember a bug, when Oo or LO (i can not remember) exported highlight as background color of a character, which was for MS Office not the same. But the result was the same, you were not possible to clear the highlight in MS Office.

Open this file in MS Office 2019 and try to set the highlight to "no color" - you see no change.
Comment 4 Orwel 2021-03-24 20:18:21 UTC
I have tested the behavior also in Ms Office 2010 with the same result, highlight is not possible to remove.

Please see bug 125268 and bug 132695.
Comment 6 Justin L 2021-03-25 10:41:11 UTC
I expect that using the character shading tool (found under the paragraph section in MS Word) will remove the character background when you choose "no colour".

Yes, see bug 132695 for the verbose discussion about this. This is a WONTFIX/NOTABUG.

If you really want it to export as highlight, change LO settings in Options - Load/Save - Microsoft Office - Character Highlighting: export as highlighting.

ShadingRemovalTool.png: How to remove shading in MS Word 2007+

Prior to LO 5.0, and starting again in LO 7.0, the way to remove the character background in MS Word is to use Word's more flexible Shading tool (misplaced in the paragraph section).

Many thanks, I have forgotten about this Options setting as I used this correctly for years. Probably due the need of resetting of the user profile when upgrading to 7.0 for another bug (lost icons) this options changed in my settings.

I would suggest, that the Option in Load/Save - MS Office - Character highlighting is set to Export as HIGHLIGHTING as DEFAULT. Now it is set to Shading.

I think this cause some chaos:
- both LO and MS Office work with "HIGHLIGHT",
but if you work in LO and use highlight and export the file to .doc/.docx without knowing about this issue, you expect other result, as you get, because by default means the export to .doc/.docx:
LO HIGHLIGHT = MS SHADOW which is confusing.

I quickly checked the other bugs you mentioned but I get lost and do not know, if the default setting will be changed or not:)

It definitely will not be changed again. (Highlight was the default from 5.0 - 6.4.) Using Highlight always changes the colour that the LO user set (since it is limited to 16 colours), and that also causes a lot of concerns.

Since the shading tool is not so hard to find in Word any more, the benefits of defaulting to highlight are now fairly slim.

P.S. For those who do decide to export to highlight, there are a lot of fixes for that situation coming in LO 7.2.
