Description Shane 2021-04-18 06:56:18 UTC
Description:
1.

I imported a docx file to edit.
Saved the file. Later I shut down my computer.
The next day everytime I opened this file openoffice froze (OpenOffice not responding)
.
This problem was finally resolved as follows.
Updated Openoffice to 7.1.2.2 (64 bit) => no effect, program freezes
Uninstalled Openoffice and reinstalled => no effect, program freezes
Using a separate computer opened the file using MS Word and saved with a new name, re attempted to open file on first computer with Openoffice => failed, program freezes

On a second computer opened the file with MSWord and saved the file as "strict open xml" => SOLVED!
Can now open the renamed (strictly following xml) version of the file on the first computer using OpenOffice

Does this mean that somewhere one of these programs is not following the same xml standard/protocol?

Does this have something to do with the way I shut down the computer without closing OpenOffice even though I had already saved the file before stopping work. If the file had already been saved then there should be no need for OpenOffice to "recover" the file, even if OpenOffice was killed by the system.

2.

Program freezes on attempt to dismiss "tips at start up dialogue" (but with the file discussed above open in the background)

3.

Related to 1 above, program freezes on attempt to dismiss "recover file" dialogue (as per above)

Notes. The file was a .docx document sent to me to be edited. I saved the file with a new name also as .docx. This new file had comments and in text changes that were being tracked.
I do not use the odt format routinely as all files I get are in MS Word format.
