Description D. Gold 2021-04-26 15:42:52 UTC
Description:
In many of my Writer files, unwanted spaces are added between the footnote number at the bottom of the page and the text of that footnote, for example,

24 This footnote concerns.....

Every time I return to the file, I find that the number of spaces has increased (for example, after the number there may be two or three completely blank lines before the first word of the text of the footnote).

I wonder if the problem has to do with the fact that when creating a footnote I add one blank space between the number and the text of the footnote because I have found that if I do not add a space, when I print the file, I find that the first character of the text of the footnote is flush with the number.

Actual Results:
1. Create a footnote
2. Leave one blank space after the footnote number at bottom of page.
3. Type the text of the footnote
4. Retrieve the file periodically and each time the number of blank spaces will have grown.

Expected Results:
Number of spaces keeps on growing.

Reproducible: Always

1.Do you save as ODT or DOC/X?
2.6.0 is really old, please use current LO Still or Fresh.
Comment 2 D. Gold 2021-04-27 00:00:01 UTC
I generally save on ODT but if I have to send a text to someone, I make a copy on Microsoft Word .docx because hardly anyone I am in contact with can open ODT.

If you like, I can save the same text on ODT and on docx to see on which the spaces appear.

This additional information mey be useful: it seems that the number of spaces added each time is the number of spaces for which my tab (indentation for paragraphs) is set.

Can you please attach a document with the problem?
Comment 5 D. Gold 2021-09-13 02:26:10 UTC
I would gladly send you a document showing the added spaces but when I clicked "Add an attachment" above, I saw the warning "your e-mail address and other personal data contained in your bug report, will be publicly available and cannot be deleted."

Please therefore send me an email address to which I can send an attachment without my personal information being shown.

This additional information may be of help:

1. My custom is to manually insert one space between the number of the footnote (in the footnote) and the first character of the footnote because if I do not, the printed version comes out with no space at all between that number and the first character, which does not look right.

Might, therefore, my adding one space manually trigger the continual adding of spaces?

2. When I use the delete key to remove the unwanted spaces, each hit of the key removes as many spaces as I have set my tab for.

3. The farther back in time I last opened the document, the longer the blank space. Which is to say, the unwanted spaces accumulate even when the document has been unopened.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

You can send it to me and I will see, if I can anonymise the information (replacing letters with "x" etc.).

Since in your most recent email to me you wrote "You can send it [the file] to me and I will see, if I can anonymise the information (replacing letters with "x" etc.)" but you did not specify an email address, I clicked "Reply" and sent you the attachment (it need not be anonymised further because it contains no personal information).

That email has now come back for being undeliverable.

Please specify to what email address the attachment should be sent.

Just to clarify: the emails are notifications of what is happening in Bugzilla. You have access to my email both in Bugzilla and in the email notification. My nickname is a link to my email.

The reason your email bounced back is that you sent it to the bugzilla-daemon, which is just a relay mechanism.

If the document does not need to be anonymised, you can attach it yourself by clicking on the "Add an attachment" link in your Bugzilla report.

After I switched to version 7.1.6.2, the problem disappeared.

By the way, I tried several times in the last few years to switch to a newer version but always got an error message that the newer version was incompatible with my software.

A day ago, I tried again and this time was successful.
