Description V Stuart Foote 2021-05-26 13:26:19 UTC
The new 'fat cross' cursor for cell selection on a Calc sheet needs additional sizes of the cursor designed to support use at higher screen resolution of modern display. Its single 17px matrix is too small at HiDPI.

Don't see need for UX input. The cursors for high resolution are just missing.
Comment 2 Heiko Tietze 2021-05-31 08:00:52 UTC
But I wonder if this can be done until 7.2 or if we have to revert the patch / make it experimental somehow since it makes Calc hard to use under this environment.

Why the patch for bug 104169 was accepted if high resolution cursors are missing ?

Remains an issue

Setting Calc to the Themed pointer (Tools -> Options -> Calc -> View "Pointer" 'Themed' radio button) gives the "FatCross" pointer icon that is too small on HiDPI displays.

Remains an issue.

If choosing to use an icon themed pointer for Calc (Tools -> Options -> LO Calc -> View "Visual Aids" radio button 'Themed' or 'System'), the cell selection icon is changed to use the "fatcross" pointer provided for each Icon theme.

An SVG is provided for each at a 32 x 32 resolution, and PNG are prebuilt. As is a prebuilt CUR for use by Windows vcl.

The SVG is adequate, but case can still be made that the 32 x 32 based design needs to be reworked for clarity on hi-res displays. Also as Mike K. suggests in https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=104169#c51 with
demonstration in attachment 172318 [details] making the fatcross pointer transparent and adding a center "hair cross" for precise pointing. The current opaque fatcross can be a bit cumbersome to use, e.g. when attempting to position onto the cell's "Fill Handle" (where the os/DE system precision selection pointer will toggle active).

So for hi-res and better useability in general, still need a 64 x 64, or 96 x 96 sized icon source that can be scaled by os/DE as needed.
