Description Olivier Hallot 2021-06-04 12:33:50 UTC
Half-width and full-width character deserves an explanation in the glossary:

https://help.libreoffice.org/7.2/en-US/text/shared/00/00000005.html?&DbPAR=WRITER&System=UNIX

(Help file is helpcontent2/source/text/shared/00/00000005.xhp)

in order to address a good explanation on string converstion (StrConv Function) as well as Find and Replace dialog

I believe this needs some clarification - it would be confusing for most who do not meet wide/narrow characters daily (so for all except Asian users). Wide vs narrow characters - *IIUC* - are special forms of normal Latin alphabet (and maybe other Western alphabets, like Cyrillic/Greek?), that are shaped to fit a single Chinese character (wide), or two Western characters per one Chinese character (narrow) (again, this is IIUC - and I am confused by this, too). Single-byte vs double-byte tells not much, and in fact is misleading for Unicode - it comes from use of a *specific* codepage on MS systems in Asia, where those characters were encoded specifically - but current text this *looks* as if it converts between single-byte and UTF-16 encodings (which is not so).

I'd like to work on this.

However I don't quite understand this link. It seems to be about some irrelevant VBA help?

The link is a patch for the help on VBA function StrConv implemented in LibreOffice which has half-width, full-width, katakana, hiragana characters as parameters.

The page is temporary displayed in this link:
https://help.libreoffice.org/7.2/en-US/text/sbasic/shared/strconv.html

It is not a copy or clone. The function StrConv must be compatible with MS VBA StrConv function.

Thanks. Sorry for not looking into that Gerrit patch closer.

Here I agree with Mike that "single-byte" and "double-byte" are not the best terms to describe these properties, as they are not exactly accurate and mislead users into thinking they are related to encoding while they are not.

My first draft for the glossary page is at:
https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/c/help/+/116771

I didn't not mention "single/double-byte" at all as the entry is already rather long. But of course it can be added if deemed necessary. Reviews and suggestions are welcome.

Ming Hua committed a patch related to this issue.
It has been pushed to "master":

https://git.libreoffice.org/help/commit/47df6ad11ac2e9c8c8d1f6e9c1049acbb56785e1

Mark as FIXED since the patch is committed now. Suggestions for improvement are of course still welcome.
