The problem was that we try to do this decision too early, effectively the page width and margins were counted from the default letter size, instead of the actual values, which did not arrive at the time of the decision. Created attachment 172852 [details] Minimized example file This seems to be specific to being placed in the header. A similar floating table appears correctly in the documents body. I also noticed that having only two empty paragraphs in the header of this document instead of three makes it appear as well.

Created attachment 172857 [details] The original file in Word and a copy of it in Writer Another interesting side note: the floating table disappears for me only if the document is opened in read only mode, i.e. when it's already open in Word. In normal read-write mode the thing appears ~correctly.
Bug 137788 is about this document, with screenshot. Not sure would another bug help when the original one didn't have any move.
