I pasted a table in from calc to a writer doc. The columns resized so now they are very very wide. There's no easy way to resize them because the RHS side of the column is off the page and invisible so I can't pick up the diver and drag it back. Basic UI failure.
Try use menu Paste Special -> Paste Special, select HTML variant, press OK button But in general I agree with the problem. MS Word in the same case shows a horizontal ruler wider than page width and if we set up the text cursor into the table then we'll see table border on the ruler out of the page and we'll can move it as we need
Please be more specific. How large, what format (use paste special), what is RHS, OS/Version (take it from the About dialog)? And ideally you share a document that illustrates the issue.

Just create a Calc table with 1 row and 40 columns, type "wwwwwwwww" in every cell in the row, copy the row with data and simple paste in Writer document using Ctrl+V or Paste icon on the toolbar
Created attachment 173728 [details] Screenshot And what exactly do you not see?
Created attachment 173740 [details] wide table in landscape page, need method(s) to reduce its width A sample document with a wide table (4 rows of 13 columns of 20 characters each) Attempt to reduce its width with any of the main menu Table -> Size sub menu, or by selection and drag actions. Now change Page property from landscape to portrait, table will remain intact but extends beyond page margins--try to work with width now to bring table bounds within page margins. Any way?

While inherited from OOo, setting version at 6.2.0.3 bcz of last major table refactoring Justin L did at that release. Tables extending beyond page margins are not really accommodated.
(In reply to V Stuart Foote from comment #5) > Any way? What baffles me is the "paste from Calc and get a overlong table" part. To adjust the table size use table properties and set width = 17cm on the first tab.
The bug is still here with 7.2.5.2 and applies to pasting an oversize table from writer to writer as well

After reading this again I presume it's about inserting a Calc sheet as object. Don't see how we can solve it. If we talk about Writer tables, example in comment 5 after rotating to portrait, I'd say the dialog offers sufficient means to change the table width. Wouldn't add means to deal with content out of the canvas. But again what kind of table do you have in mind?
