Description MJ.connect 2021-10-26 14:48:48 UTC
After changing over from Word to LO (7.2.1.2) completely, I am missing the “Provide feedback with sound" feature so much. Please could it be included. Whilst reading about this issue, I learned that I am not the only one. In Word, it can be activated or deactivated and in control panel of Windows under Sound - Sounds it can be defined and controlled.

I read that certain ppl consider this feature as unimportant and not necessary. For them, this might be true for real. But luckily ppl have different tastes. I belong to the category who integrated sounds into the workflow, means that I do not have to look at it because I already heard it. This is not stupid, just a different approach to the issue that has to be acknowledged as well.

Thanks a lot for your attention.

I like the idea, but where would we get the sound effects from?

This is a rhetorical question to say that somebody will have to create and contribute them under some kind of compatible license.

Since it is an enhancement request, let's ask design-team for further input and decision.

This feedback is a very subtle jingle played on insertion and deletion. Hardly improving accessibility, IMO. If we implement something similar it would probably be combined with uno:Delete commands - and consequently playing every time you press delete. Quite annoying.

So I don't see the advantage. Do you, Michael?

There are online databases with Creative Commons licensed sounds. Examples:

If this is really just about playing a sound on insertion/deletion, I personally don't see a huge gain in the use cases I can think of right now either.

Can you describe the use cases/workflows and advantages of this a bit further?

I just quickly tried with Word ("Microsoft® Word for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2211 Build 16.0.15831.20220) 64-bit") on Windows 10 22H2). Activated the feature according to [1] and it's unclear to me how to know or configure on what events a sound is played. I see nothing specific for Word/MSO in control panel's "Sound" -> "Sounds".

If the idea is that there is a generic way for apps to integrate into the Windows sound configuration by providing modules or somesuch (similar to what is e.g. possible in KDE Plasma's notification configuration that allows for app-specific modules), some documentation on how to integrate into that would be useful. (Or is this something Microsoft-specific and third party apps can't get integrated into this, but would have to implement their complete own handling of sounds,...?)
