Description: The page panel to the left shows a miniature overview of the pages and enables the user to select a page to go to. But it is too difficult to see where the individual pages are. There is no boarder around the pages and no space between pages. If you have only white pages the page panel is basically just white. Even if you have something on the pages it is very difficult to quickly see the pages. Compare with Powerpoint to see the huge difference in readabilty. I think it was not like this in earlier versions of Libreoffice that I have used before. Steps to Reproduce: 1. Clear user profile. 2. Install Libreoffice 7.1.6.2 3. Start impress with default new presentation 4. Create 5 new pages. Actual Results: The pages in the page panel are very difficult to clearly see and get an overview. Expected Results: That the individual pages are easy to see and quickly select. Compare with Powerpoint. Reproducible: Always User Profile Reset: Yes Additional Info: Version: 7.1.6.2 (x64) / LibreOffice Community Build ID: 0e133318fcee89abacd6a7d077e292f1145735c3 CPU threads: 8; OS: Windows 10.0 Build 18363; UI render: Skia/Vulkan; VCL: win Locale: sv-SE (sv_SE); UI: en-US Calc: threaded

Created attachment 175986 [details] Powerpoint, good UI design One example of what is 10x better visibility.
Downloaded old Libreoffice 4.4.7.2 and it is much better. The slides are very distinct and easy to see because there is a border/shadow around, and a gap between pages. So it looks like in 5+ year Impress took a big step back in usability. If this is by design, I think that the person who decided that should not work with UI design ever again in life.
Created attachment 175987 [details] LO main build as of 2021-10-29 on macOS
Thanks for the input, Jim. Clearly you have a point and this is a valid request. However looking at the nightly build this seems improved quite a bit already. Could you install LibreOffice nightly build and see if the problem persists using that build: https://dev-builds.libreoffice.org/daily/master
One could still debate whether the background color of the slides should still have a different color (some light grey in light mode and the opposite for dark mode) to better differentiate the slides (default white) from background.
Please deactivate this and try again: Tools - Options - LibreOffice - View - Use Skia for all rendering You could also indeed try with a newer version and still use Skia in case it is solved. Could be some graphics driver issue, though and then we can add the driver to a list of problematic ones.
Created attachment 176009 [details] screenshot I know this is a windows only bug, but I wanted to show steve how LO is looking on my linux. Master version. 7.3
I’m unable to reproduce this on Windows 11 with a trunk daily build. I don’t recall ever seeing a visual bug like in attachment 175985 [details] either, but I don’t have a HiDPI screen like the OP.

Tried again. Same problem in Impress and Draw. With or without Skia. No visible border around pages. Icons are pixelated also. LO seems to be getting worse with each version.
The pane looks nice on Linux with a dark theme but obviously not on Windows. We should use the tools > colors > Application Background for the slide/pages sidebar rather than a color from the system theme.
I don't know if it is related, but the selection rectangle is extreamly laggy, next to useless.
Checked on macOS and Windows and both look nice with border and simulated shadow around the page thumbnail. Apparently a SKIA bug.
(In reply to Heiko Tietze from comment #18) > Checked on macOS and Windows and both look nice with border and simulated > shadow around the page thumbnail. Apparently a SKIA bug. Jim said "With or without Skia", though. Heiko: you set this to NEW, but did not confirm, so I guess it was a mistake.
(In reply to Buovjaga from comment #19) > Heiko: you set this to NEW, but did not confirm, so I guess it was a mistake. Confirmed from the screenshot. Running master in a VirtualBox with Windows and Skia is as good or bad as in comment 10.
Can not reproduce. Seems like a HiDPI and Skia Vulkan issue. Use the checkbox to 'Force Skia software rendering' to place it in Frame based raster mode, rather than Vulkan vector rendering mode. Retest. Also please reset your os Display Settings -> Display Resolution down to 1920x1080 and start LO. See how that renders the Slide pane previews. Also, on a 4K display you should be changing the icon theme to use 'Colibre (SVG)'--done from Tools -> Options -> View. The packaged PNG icons of the standard 'Colibre' set do not scale much beyond 175% without pixilation. The SVG theme will be resampled on LO launch into a new set of PNG icons at resolution appropriate for the UI.
I tried with 1920x1080 and Skia in software mode. Still same result. But I have a workaround. On the master view, draw a rectangle outline around page edges in it will look nice in the page panel. And the Colibre (SVG) looks great in 4k. Suggest this is automatically enabled or something. Normally people don't expect that you manually need to change icon styles to make program look decent.
For what it's worth, an unrelated report show us the same issue in attachment 177463 [details] of bug 146701, using LO 7.2. Jim, it would be good to test with a currently supported version, preferably LO 7.5, to see if the issue remains. Thank you.
