Description Paul S 2021-12-08 11:41:24 UTC
Description:
Version is 7.2.4.1 which is not in version list below.

Word document containing text with bullet point characters that has, presumably, been copied/pasted from elsewhere. Bullets appear correctly in Word but in Writer they show as 3517 (which I assume is the UTF8 code for the offending character).

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open attached document in Writer
2. Error is immediately visible
3. Compare with how it appears in Word for verification

Actual Results:
35
17

Expected Results:
Bullet symbol

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: Yes

I somewhat recalling having seen such a report before

In MS Word 2003, I pressed "Alt-X" after the bullet, and it returned U+F0B7 which is a PUA (private use area). The bullet is using the Symbol font.

<w:rFonts w:ascii="Times New Roman" w:eastAsia="Times New Roman" w:hAnsi="Symbol" w:cs="Times New Roman"/>

and it's a good news. But the bad news here is it is still not the same bullet items as should be...
Comment 8 Justin L 2023-05-18 12:33:48 UTC
This is just a typed bullet - not connected with lists/numbering.

In 7.6+, on Ubuntu without a Symbol font, my computer is just using the paragraph's direct formatting of Times New Roman to display the character (and it is not seen as a bullet).

This is basically a WONTFIX. By definition, a PUA character is a non-standard character (Personal Use Area). It is a space for a font to put whatever they want. In other words, if you don't have that specific font available, you can't see the intended result.

A document should never use a PUA character unless the audience for the document is 100% controlled - guaranteed forever to have the required font.

A document should never use a PUA character when there is an adequate, standard Unicode alternative (and there are many bullet characters to chose from).
