Description hexagon-recursion 2022-01-19 12:06:21 UTC
Description:
LibreOffice Calc has a spellchecker. The spellchecker supports spreadsheets written in multiple languages. Unfortunately this feature is hidden behind an unobvious user interface.

I expected to be able to set the language for selected cells via the Tools -> Language menu, but It currently only offers me to set the language "For all text".

In order to set the language only for cells you selected I currently have to:
1. Right click
2. Select "Format Cells..."
3. Select "Font"
4. Find my language in the "Language" drop-down

This is counterintuitive for multiple reasons:
1. After not finding an option to change the language in the Tools -> Language menu a user is likely to assume that this feature is not supported
2. Spell checking has little to do with formatting and even less to do with font

Please add an option to set the language "For selected cells" to the Tools -> Language menu

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Select a cell
2. Open the Tools -> Language menu

Actual Results:
See that it does not offer you an option to set the language only for cells you selected and keep the language for the rest of the spreadsheet the same

Expected Results:
I expected to see an option named "For selected cells" under the option named "For all text"

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

Hi Hexagon

Version 7.5 of LibreOffice now makes it easier to reach that Font tab: use the Status bar's language menu, click "more". In previous versions, it would lead to the Languages section of the Options menu.

Can you please test version 7.5 and report back?
Thank you!

That's an inaccurate description. "More" just goes to the same place as [CTRL]+[1] for the selected cells. If the latest-used tab was "Font", then you get to "Font", but if the latest was, say, "Number", then that's the tab you see.

IOW, right-clicking on the status bar "Language", then navigating to "more" is just the same as [CTRL]+[1]. And the same as cell's right-click > Format Cells.

[OT] And we lost the possibility to get to the general Language Options directly from the status bar, instead of adding a clear submenu item within that same status bar "language" right-click menu, among several alternative solutions. [/OT].

You're right, ady, I got confused there.
This report actually matches an enhancement request that's been around for a while: bug 76750.
Let's mark as a duplicate.
