Description Aaron Gerber 2022-01-21 20:05:57 UTC
Description:
Currently, (I'm Running 7.0.6.2.) if I create a cross-reference to a bookmark, it lets me select in "Insert reference to" Page, Chapter, Reference, Above/Below, or "As Page Style". Please add "line number" to that list.

Someone has pointed out to me since I posted this that this only makes sense if "Show numbering" is enabled. That could easily be straightened out by a dialog when the user selects to display the line number for the cross-reference to the effect:

"Line numbering is not set to display in this document. Set it to display?"
   [Yes] [No]

And if the user selects "No", the "Line Number" could be deselected in the "Insert refrence to" box.

This is probably not (yet) possible as it's missing in the open format standard. But it could be extended.

Do you have a good use case that illustrates the need for this kind of reference?
Comment 4 Aaron Gerber 2022-02-28 13:45:49 UTC
Indeed. I have busy documents that are generally going to be viewed in .pdf (and sometimes, printed) format that would have a lot of internal references. Preferabbly, the references should send the reader to the line number. If they were viewing it in writer then the bookmark would be enough. However, I need the reference to be useable once the document is in its final format.

IIRC religious texts such as bible or koran use line numbers for referencing verses. Not sure if this is the line number but the paragraph. And cross-referencing numbered paragraphs is possible. That's why I doubt going further is a use case for more than a handful users.

The topic was on the agenda of the design meeting.

+ unclear use case, references to numbered paragraphs seems enough
+ never heard about references to line numbers in other office programs
+ but the request is to _show_ the line number
+ use case is apparently to link to a particular line
+ lines are not numbered (the annotation is some kind of decoration) and
referencing is tricky; unclear whether line within a current page or
     the whole document
+ still, the recommended workflow is to use numbered paragraphs
     (and keep those short)
+ (auto) bookmarks per macro might help

The recommendation is to not implement line numbers as target. Keep in mind that we have to follow (and steer) the open document format and if such a feature would be implemented it needs to be done in all applications using the format and other formats too.
