UPDATE: July 28, 2022 — I found out what was causing the brackets! I started experimenting by turning off items in the "View" menu one by one. When I turned off "Field Shadings" the brackets all disappeared! WooHoo! Probably should have tried that to begin with. At any rate, if anyone else has this issue, now they know how to fix it! 😊
