Description: Regularly while working with Libreoffice documents, the program freezes completely, my mouse cursor becomes a spinning ball that is still while the mouse is stationary but which spins while I move the mouse. I have to force quit the program and start again. I cannot determine what the trigger is for this. This has been happening since I first installed Libre Office 7.1 on my Macbook Air M1. Steps to Reproduce: 1. Use Libreoffice for some time 2. 3. Actual Results: LibreOffice freezes Expected Results: LibreOffice does not freeze Reproducible: Couldn't Reproduce User Profile Reset: Yes Additional Info: Version: 7.3.0.3 / LibreOffice Community Build ID: 0f246aa12d0eee4a0f7adcefbf7c878fc2238db3 CPU threads: 8; OS: Mac OS X 12.2.1; UI render: default; VCL: osx Locale: en-GB (en_GB.UTF-8); UI: en-US Calc: threaded
@Adrienne : Can you check to see if you have any logged details of the crash in your system logs. These can be searched using the Console.app in the Utilities folder.
Hi. No, nothing there.
- are all files used local files or some are on a network, usb, ... ? - do you use any accessibility application? - on which modules do you work, Calc, Writer, Impress, Base, all of them? Java triggers sometimes some pb and Base uses Java in general and some other specific features in other modules may also use Java. - just to be sure, could you try to rename your LO directory profile so it'll force LO to create a brand new one? (see https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/FirstSteps#Corrupted_user_profile)
Hi Julien - are all files used local files or some are on a network, usb, ... ? Most files are kept on an external SSD connected via usb-c - do you use any accessibility application? (In reply to adrienne from comment #4) > Hi Julien > > - are all files used local files or some are on a network, usb, ... ? > > Most files are kept on an external SSD connected via usb-c >... I don't know very much MacOs, for example if there are regular (at least once per week) updates of the system anyway, could you check you got all the updates? Then I don't know if LO freezes happen after 30 min, 1 hour, 2 hours or more but I think it could be interesting for the test to: - copy the files you need to work with on local drive - work on these files for some time and see if it freezes too. If it still freezes, at least we'll know it's not related to usb or the external ssd itself If it doesn't freeze and supposing it happens only with LO, it could be interesting to test on another usb external device to know if it's the device. Also, it could be usb related in this case so whatever the external device.
So, I've basically reverted to using OnlyOffice to avoid LO crashing, and I can work on these files there without any problem. I also use this device for video editing in Da Vinci Resolve and music production and have no problems with other applications, so I don't think its the device. When I can I'll try working on files on the internal SSD, but from memory this freezing has occurred with new documents, even before I saved them anywhere. I'll update you with my observations.
Let's put some other bugtrackers about hanging on M1 for info. Reading them, I just remember there are now 2 versions for LO on Mac: Intel version and Apple Silicon one (which uses Rosetta and not native support yet). With notarization/rights pb + Java pbs too, what a mess for LO on MacOs...
@Adrienne : You might try turning off anything related to Skia rendering in the LibreOffice Preferences > General > View dialog These options have been known to cause issues with LibreOffice. Skia rendering will be turned off by default in the upcoming LO 7.3.1 Unfortunately, many of the reports (I can't say 100% because I simply don't remember) that I have seen so far which have been similar to yours, i.e. intermittent freezing of the application, have been reported against Macbook Air M1, rather than with M1 in iMacs, macMinis, or Macbook Pros.

So, I may have found the culprit, or perhaps its a coincidence. LO was crashing still but I noticed I had "Use a Java runtime environment" deselected. Once I selected it, no more crashing.

It's quite strange that Java was unselected since when you renamed your LO directory profile (see comments 3 and 4), LO should have detected itself all the Java stuff. Of course, I suppose Java was already installed when you created the bugtracker and you had the same version as now.
Yea not sure about that. Perhaps there were multiple causes of the crash (Skia for instance) and I deselected it while experimenting. In fact I am not sure if I have any JRE installed. The list beneath is empty.
Ok and now can you reproduce the freeze and if yes, can you provide the steps it requires to reproduce this?
good idea. i will try and let you know.
@Adrienne : please test with a 7.5 beta pre-release or the daily developer build 7.6 alpha (aarch64) to see if this issue has now been resolved. A number of fixes have gone into the code recently, and thus the problem you reported may now have been fixed.
Since Comment 11, I haven't had any crashes, so I don't think I can provide any more useful information at this point.
