Description Dave Lovelace 2022-03-26 22:26:39 UTC
Description:
For more than 20 years we've sent out an annual newsletter. It has had an embedded graphic logo each year. These docs were originally sent in WordPerfect, but were eventually ported to LibreOffice Writer.

The logo was apparently originally a .CGM, then converted to a .WPG. However it was embedded in the Writer document, which was then copied and modified each year, for around the last ten or fifteen years. This has worked with no problems.

This year, no matter which of these old Writer docs (.odt) we look at, we now see not our graphic but merely a little symbol and "graphics1".

If I left-click on the box which should hold this image (but which now says "graphics1" inside it) and choose "properties", I can see the image if I click on the "image" and "crop" tabs--so SOMEHOW Writer can process them!

If I open the original image files, they open in Draw. They look fine, but I can't figure out how to do anything with them.

As I say, we've done this newsletter yearly for a long time without this, so it seems pretty obvious that something in LibreOffice is to blame. But I don't know what to do at this point, and I'm under pressure to get this document finished so it can be sent out. (The person doing most of the work didn't see fit to mention to me that the graphic wasn't displaying correctly, so I'm getting into it late in the process.)

Steps to Reproduce:
1.I'm sorry, I can't tell you how to reproduce it. Documents that have displayed properly as recently as last year do not do so now.
2.
3.

Actual Results:
Graphic displays the name, not the actual image.

Expected Results:
Image should display as it has for many years.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

Additional Info:
Version: 7.1.8.1 (x64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: e1f30c802c3269a1d052614453f260e49458c82c
CPU threads: 4; OS: Windows 10.0 Build 19043; UI render: Skia/Raster; VCL: win
Locale: en-US (en_US); UI: en-US
Calc: CL

To repeat once more: this is a change in LibreOffice. I am loading in documents that displayed correctly when opened by earlier versions of LibreOffice for many, many years.

What shows in the "crop" tab

Here's what shows in the properties "crop" tab. This is what the image looks like. Obviously LibreOffice can understand the image format! Why doesn't it show where it used to?

From your description, it sounds like the image is still in the document. If so, this sounds like the same problem I have experienced. What worked for me was to select the invisible graphic with the mouse, then press control-x to delete the graphic, and then press control-z to undo the deletion. The graphic would then appear for me. In some recent editing I have done, it seems that version 7.3 might not have the same issues.

Thank you. I tried that with no success. I also up-revved. But investigating further, I discovered that no images were displayed in any document--whatever image type. (We just don't have much call for images, and I was led astray by having the image type be an old, old one.)

Moreover, the Print Previes showed the graphic.

All that caused me to go looking for a setting to turn images on & off. And of course there is one, under "view". I don't know whether someone accidentally clicked on it (during the past year) or whether the default changed at an earlier up-rev. Probably the former, "someone" probably being me, I guess.

Sorry for wasting people's time with this. I'm marking the status as RESOLVED-NOTABUG; I hope that's the proper procedure. Again, apologies. Sigh.
