On pc Debian x86-64 with LO Debian package 7.3.3, I don't reproduce this even with gen rendering.

Could you give a try at 7.2.6 or from the newest branch 7.3, 7.3.2 LO version?
You can also give a try at https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/FirstSteps

I don't repro with v7.4.0.0alpha0+.

It may be fixed in newer versions, but it seems to imply that macros created with newer versions will crash when loading in older versions. Is there any expectation of compatibility here?

Did you give a try with 7.2.6 or 7.3.3?

I mean 7.4 branch is the dev branch, https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleasePlan show first version (7.4.0) should be released in about 15 days.
But as all first versions, it may contain some regression and should be a avoid for production.

Now to come back to your question, I don't know. Since LO 7.1 branch is EOL and you can upgrade LO for free, I wouldn't spend time to investigate. Of course, just my opinion and I suppose other people may investigate.
