Description Guido Iodice 2022-05-20 10:39:47 UTC
Description:
This is a problem I have always had with Libreoffice.

The interface is slightly laggy.

For example, when I am typing and then select an image, the icons on the toolbar and the parameters in the sidebar take about 0.5-1 second to update and become active.

I've tried everything, turn on/off Hardware Acceleration, turn on/off anti-aliasing, turn on/off Skia, use the gen backend... but there seems to be no solution.

Steps to Reproduce:
This is only an example, the problem is general in all components and everytime the interface updates:

1. write some words in Writer
2. add an image
3. click on the text and then again the image

Actual Results:
the interface (toolbars, sidebar) updates slowly in 0.5-1 second

Expected Results:
the interface should be uptated almost instantly

Reproducible: Always

What version of LibreOffice are you using? What OS?

Please, copy and paste the "Version Information" found under Help - About LibreOffice.
Comment 2 Guido Iodice 2022-05-20 13:58:40 UTC
Version: 7.3.3.2 / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 30(Build:2)
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 5.17; UI render: Skia/Vulkan; VCL: kf5 (cairo+xcb)
Locale: it-IT (it_IT.UTF-8); UI: it-IT
7.3.3-2
Calc: threaded

Note that "Skia/Vulkan" is because i'm trying to solve the problem, event without skia the problem persists.
Comment 3 Guido Iodice 2022-05-20 14:48:28 UTC
No, i'ts not a problem of Kf5. It's the same with gtk3 and gen.
Comment 4 Telesto 2022-05-20 18:34:26 UTC
Moving back to UNCONFIRMED, until some else confirms the issue.
Comment 5 Rafael Lima 2022-05-20 18:57:23 UTC
I cannot reproduce the bug. I am using LibreOffice with the kf5 VCL backend as well and I have not experienced any lag.

Let's see if anyone else can reproduce this.
Comment 6 Guido Iodice 2022-05-20 19:31:20 UTC
this is a video made on windows, with the same problem. When the interface is redrawed, it takes a second to redraw it. I presume it is because vcl is slow

https://youtu.be/6tSLpXf2acQ?t=137

this does not make Libreoffice unusable, but it is very tedious when you switch often from one object to another and have to wait each time for the interface to be updated.
Comment 7 Guido Iodice 2022-05-20 19:35:41 UTC
To compare with another big software, inkscape has no lag in the interface.

This bug may stay open for a long time but it makes no sense.
Hardly will a random tester confirm this. That's why I set Lowest, not that it's not important.

No good idea what to test more, but you may:
1. test LO daily master that is now 7.5+ also with on/off options Skia, HW ACC, AA
2. test older LO to see if a regression, easy with https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Installing_in_parallel/Linux
3. see other bugs.
