hi, I'm sure you see it more clearly how line numbering is sort of odd in the system of Writer, and how it could be better integrated. My suggestion is just a sketchy one, with not enough thinking behind it yet. What I see is: Line numbering can be activated in Tool's menu... which in my reading implies that it is switched on/off per machine / Writer instance. But it's not like that.. switching it on/off happens per document, formatting also. Which is good !! :) It is also good that it's together with Chapter numbering and footnotes / endnotes.. if these 3 went to the Formatting menu, all would be well :) Even better it would be if they went to Styles... I'm not sure, but Tools is sort of misleading.. - - - thanks for developing Writer - - -
Peter, thank you for suggestion. Let's ask design team for their input and decision. Personally I won't support that idea. On the one hand I agree, that "Tools" ist more like a container for severla featurees, but on the otherhand: - We would have to change Lo Help and Writer Guide (a lot of work) - List of entries in "Format" menu is already very long (we should avoid scolling in a menu) - You can customize menu structure cc: Design-Team
Line numbering isn't formatting. It's more a view option. But I agree with Dieter So, here is my -1

But it's true that many items on the tools menu aren't document-specific. The thing is, it's not just these three. We have: * Macros * Protect Document * Update * Language which are also per-document. > Even better it would be if they went to Styles... Doesn't fit there either. > I'm not sure, but Tools is sort of misleading.. It's at least less misleading than Styles or Formatting :-( Suggest resolve as WONTFIX - although other suggestions about splitting up Tools are at least worth listening to IMHO.
We discussed this idea in the design meeting, but no further input in addition to what has been commented here. The function is well located at Tools.
