Description: When launching LibreOffice it does not start. It crashes, leaving soffice.bin as a suspended and unkillable process on Windows 11. I have clean installed LO and made sure to completely remove my user profile. I started with version 7.2.7, then I upgraded to 7.3.5 It does launch in Safe Mode, did a reset to factory defaults, no use, removed hardware acceleration as a test and LO starts and works again. Grafic driver is nVidia GameReady v. 516.59, multiple monitors attached, main has nVidia G-Sync (variable refresh rate) Windows Error Report (german) Name der fehlerhaften Anwendung: soffice.bin, Version: 7.3.5.2, Zeitstempel: 0x62d2d25a Name des fehlerhaften Moduls: KERNELBASE.dll, Version: 10.0.22000.795, Zeitstempel: 0x960371d1 Ausnahmecode: 0xc00000fd Fehleroffset: 0x000000000005937f ID des fehlerhaften Prozesses: 0x46cc Startzeit der fehlerhaften Anwendung: 0x01d89e8c7583bded Pfad der fehlerhaften Anwendung: C:\Program Files\LibreOffice\program\soffice.bin Pfad des fehlerhaften Moduls: C:\Windows\System32\KERNELBASE.dll Berichtskennung: f0ff9e12-364e-4a63-915d-dccdfd82ab38 Vollständiger Name des fehlerhaften Pakets: Anwendungs-ID, die relativ zum fehlerhaften Paket ist: Steps to Reproduce: 1.Start LibreOffice 2. 3. Could you check you got last graphic driver? If it's the case, please provide <user profile>/cache/skia.log (see https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/FirstSteps#Graphics-related_issues_.28_Skia_.29 for details)
Hello, my grafic driver is up to date. skia.log: RenderMethod: raster Compiler: Clang
Ok then. To attach a file, you can use this link: https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/attachment.cgi?bugid=150111&action=enter (it allows to attach a file + add a comment)
Created attachment 181393 [details] AppData\Roaming\LibreOffice\4\cache\skia.log If copy/pasting the content of the file isn't enough, have at it ^^°
Argh sorry for the noise, thought there was more in this file. Since I'm most of the time on Linux, I didn't know it could contain so little info. Lubos: thought you might be interested in this one since it concerns Skia. Should we add a block in vcl/skia/skia_denylist_vulkan.xml to blacklist Nvidia driver when it's used with Windows 11? Meanwhile, I'll put it back to UNCONFIRMED since I don't have more questions.
well, since I killed the folder between reinstalls and afterwards LO only loaded with graphic acceleration off. (hardware acceleration still greyed out in the options). Checked on my Win11 Laptop with integrated AMD graphic - lots more info, tried with my Ubuntu install, well, no dice. There everything works but Ubuntu LO doesn't use skia. Ubuntu (dualboot with problematic win11 install) LibreOffice about: Version: 7.3.4.2 / LibreOffice Community Build ID: 30(Build:2) CPU threads: 20; OS: Linux 5.15; UI render: default; VCL: kf5 (cairo+xcb) Locale: en-US (en_US.UTF-8); UI: en-US Ubuntu package version: 1:7.3.4-0ubuntu0.22.04.1 Calc: threaded
On install LO tests graphics--it should fail Vulkan and fall back to Skia raster framing gracefully. I.e. a single restart and not offer Skia Vulkan based rendering. The Skia.log will show the single entry RenderMethod: raster Compiler: Clang Only if Skia Vulkan is fully enabled will the skia.log show more details about the GPU and its driver. Depending on if developers can replicate, the GPU/Driver & os can be deny listed, or the skia source tweaked. That is why we need the specifics of the GPU/driver for its Vulkan mode. If LO balks at the driver, to get full Skia Vulkan details you need a 3rd party tool. The nVidia driver details don't give us the internals we'd need about the GPU and the Vulkan driver in use. I still find the realtech-vr utility GLView [1] the most direct method. =-ref-= [1] http://www.realtech-vr.com/home/glview
Created attachment 181514 [details] glview-NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti_PCIe_SSE2-13.XML From OpenGL Extensions Viewer - 6.3.7.0
Created attachment 181515 [details] vkview-NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti-9353.XML Sorry for the double ping, didn't see that there was a separate Vulkan report file.
Yep, and the pertinent Vulkan details for your GPU are. Not too exotic and reasonably recent. <snip> <deviceName>NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti</deviceName> <apiVersion>1.3.205</apiVersion> <deviceID>2489</deviceID> <vendorID>10de</vendorID> <driverVersion>516.236.0</driverVersion> </snip> But devs may need more debug details to figure out this particular issue--so stay plugged in. Meanwhile, you can probably go ahead and disable Vulkan rendering in your LO profile. Locate and edit the registrymodifications.xcu for your LO profile. The 'UseSkia' stanza can remain "true", but the 'ForceSkiaRaster' should be changed to "true" from its default false. <item oor:path="/org.openoffice.Office.Common/VCL"><prop oor:name="ForceSkiaRaster" oor:op="fuse"><value>false</value></prop></item> <item oor:path="/org.openoffice.Office.Common/VCL"><prop oor:name="UseSkia" oor:op="fuse"><value>true</value></prop></item> The graphics test on initial launch is supposed to do that toggle if the GPU/Driver combo is deny listed, or if the GPU falters on initial launch. IIUC it is also the mode that runs in "Safe mode". So, set the force Skia raster as a work around. Outside chance the Skia driver is really messed up, and you could drop it completely for legacy GDI+ rendering by setting the other Skia stanza false.
Thank you. I set all [...]Common/VCL props to false, LO works fine. Even my skia.log has info in it. Funny enough, seems to be the same as vkview. Ain't consistent Data wonderful? *** Bug 150178 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
So, the Skia Vulkan accelerated rendering fail on launch affects GPUs from both nVidia and AMD, and likely Intel as well. We actually don't know if it is the same point. Is the fail in LO's graphics testing--and the recovery to Skia raster framing does not complete? Or is it a GPU call gone awry. It is a chore, but we need stack traces for the systems (os/GPU & driver) this hang occurs on. Steps to configure WinDbg and the symbols cache are in the project Wiki here: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/How_to_get_a_backtrace_with_WinDbg A good trace will identify if the call is in the GPU (and a driver issue) or is in the LO graphics tests.
Hi, adding my 2 pence worth. I have repetitive crashes in Writer and Impress, whilst I'm doing a lot of copy/paste of images. I can't say which exact activity triggers the crash. The apps just hang (become unresponsive) for a few seconds and then disappear, without any crash/error dialog boxes. My event log shows similar error to Bug 150178 with "Faulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\System32\ucrtbase.dll" rather than Kernelbase.dll as shown here. For every crash, I get a warning in the App event log: The Nvidia Quadro driver detected high GPU memory usage. This will impact application performance. (In reply to terrys from comment #14) You look to be running your nVidia Quadro P2000 on Windows 11 with a very out of date driver! Current [1] is R470 U10 (473.81) August 2, 2022. Please update and retest for stability. No guarantee for improvement, as the Original Post here was already on more recent driver. Otherwise, > ... > For every crash, I get a warning in the App event log: > The Nvidia Quadro driver detected high GPU memory usage. This will impact > application performance. > (pid=16068 soffice.bin.exe 64bit) > > Followed a few seconds later by an error: > Faulting application name: soffice.bin, version: 7.4.1.2, time stamp: > 0x631c00af > Faulting module name: ucrtbase.dll, version: 10.0.22000.1, time stamp: That is a generic, but it suggests the issue might be isolated/corrected and not simply avoided by denylist. Would need WinDbg based trace as LibreOffice goes unresponsive or crashes. The WinDbg analyze steps probably won't identify issue so need a dump and trace for all the soffice.bin threads. > ... > graphics drivers, disable checkboxes in Tools/Options/View. But I'm not 100% > clear if what "V Stuart Foote" says in Comment 10 "meanwhile, you can > probably...": is that the workaround so I can continue working without crash? > Less a workaround and more the needed operating mode with a bad driver set/GPU combo. Best to just disable the Vulkan rendering if affected. > Let me know if you need more logs/info, and how/where to get them. We'd need a WinDbg based stack trace [2] with a least symbols or symbols + source (symbols for the 7.4.1.2 built by TDF, or symbols + source if you have VisualStudio installed and build it yourself). The project dailys from the x64 Windows Tinderbox do not include the symbols, the x86 TB39 does but is not going to be helpful with a 64bit GPU crash issue. =-ref-= [1] https://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx [2] https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/How_to_get_a_backtrace_with_WinDbg
