Description ajlittoz 2022-07-31 14:50:09 UTC
This bug report is a follow-on of https://ask.libreoffice.org/t/restart-end-of-document-footnotes-per-chapter/80050/8

Advance authors may wish to number their endnotes per chapter to comply with conventional editing rules.

Tools>Footnotes & Endnotes is the tool to control various aspects of note configuration

== Footnotes ==

Footnotes may be sent to end of page or end of document. When at end-of-page, a drop down-menu allows to choose numbering per page, per chapter or per document.

When "per document" is selected, the menu is disabled and, behind the scene, the numbering option in the XML is reset to "per document".

== Endnotes ==

Endnotes, by definition, are collected either at end of section or at end of document. There is no numbering option.

== Debate ==

While I understand that "per document" numbering is default for notes at end of document to produce a non-ambiguous number, which is what desires the majority of users, advanced authors can't opt for a more sophisticated scheme.

This was possible under LO 5.0.3.2. I didn't install this old release to see if this was a side-effect or not (something like selecting from the drop-down menu first then clicking "end-of-document"). Presently, existing documents needing revision don't keep their numbering as "recent" Writer versions reset the option as a fail-safe measure.

The request is to re-enable the possibility, perhaps with a warning popping up drawing attention of the user on the potential number ambiguity. If user confirms the choice, then Writer should accept it and author is the only one to blame in case this is not to expectation.

This possibility should be extended to endnotes too.

== PS ==

For those wondering how to insert "intermediate text" like chapter separators in endnotes without inserting it manually in the section at end of document, the solution is to attach an unnumbered note to the chapter heading with Insert>Footnote & Endnote>Footnote or Endnote and choosing deliberately a blank anchor. This "separator" can be styled with an appropriate paragraph style which will make it stand out of the surrounding notes.

Ajlittoz, looks like a duplicate of bug 102835. Please change it back to UNCONFIRMED with a short reasoning, if you disagree.

Bug 102835 seems to be a "composite" request with 2 parts: positioning arbitrarily the endnotes section and optionally restarting numbering at every chapter.

The present bug/feature request addresses only the restart numbering feature. IMHO, it is independent of the endnotes split (all at end/part at end of section). The restart numbering can be requested for any configuration of notes position:
- unique numbering with all notes at end
- unique numbering across notes at end of section
- chapter numbering with all notes at end
- chapter bumbering with notes at end of section

Presently, as noted elsewhere (I don't remember "where"), numbering reset is hard-wired to level-1 outline. It may be desirable to extend the reset point to allow user to select the level.

As an example, think of a book where level-1 is used for intermediate "part" titles and chapters are at level-2. The hard-wired reset to level-1 doesn't fit this structure.

I've reassigned this bug to UNCONFIRMED but if you think my argumentation is too poor for a different bug, I don't object for RESOLVED DUPLICATE.

Sorry for late reply. I agree with the difference between the two reports. Might be useful from developer perspective two distinguish between the two requests:
Bug 102835 Arranging endnotes near end of a chapter
Bug 150207 Restart numbering of footnotes (and endnotes) at each chapter
Since enhancement request in bug 102835 has been accepted, I change status to NEW.
