Description csongor 2022-09-04 13:25:34 UTC
Created attachment 182199 [details]
footnotes confuse the columns. Removing footnotes fixes the layout.

I have a document with alternating 1-column and 3-column sessions. When I add a footnote to the first 3-column part, a couple of problems occur:

1. The next 1-column session is pushed to the next page and cannot bring it back.
2. The footnote is also broken into columns rather than stretching over the whole page width
3. The multicolumn text uses only one long column instead of distributing between the columns.

Here is the initial text before adding footnotes:

TITLETITLETITLE 1
aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa
TITLETITLETITLE 2
aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa
---- next page --------
TITLETITLETITLE 3
aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa

After adding footnotes:

TITLETITLETITLE 1
aaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaa1 a
aaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaa
aaaa2 aaaa
aaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaa

TITLETITLETITLE 3
aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa

And here is what I expected:

TITLETITLETITLE 1
aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaa1 a aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaa aaaa2 aaaa aaaaaaaaaa

Thank you for reporting the bug. I can reproduce it with your document, but not in a new document.

Steps:
1. Open attachment 182199 [details]
2. Insert a new section with three columns and insert some text in first column
3. Insert footnote in first column

Actual result:
Section expands to the bottom of the text and footnote is added to column

Expected result:
Section doesn't change height and footnote is at normal position. This is also the actual result with steps 2 and 3 in a new document.

Additional information
Doesn't happen if section has only one column.

Csongor, could you confirm the findings and can you explain it? Is there something special with your document?
