Description bugzilla 2022-10-02 16:41:14 UTC
Description:
Basic Font settings are too hidden to make the program usable for newbies.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start a new copy of Impress
2. Forget everything you know from using LibreOffice before
3. Try to change the size of some text

Actual Results:
In vanilla Impress, these settings are well-hidden under right-click > character (don't you dare clicking on Text Attributes!) > Fonts

Expected Results:
When selecting text, one of the expected actions is that the user wants to change the font, fontsize or make it bold.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: Yes

Additional Info:
Option 1: Make a popup with text settings appear when selecting text
Option 2: Remove/consolidate some of the 13+ drawing related buttons from the default toolbar

Option 2 would be preferred, because it doesn't introduce new (buggy) UI elements.

Edit: Found out that the tabbed toolbar implements the desired behaviour. I was unaware of the existence of a different UI, but I guess so is any other new user as long as it's not the default.

Sorry, not seeing an issue.

With default launch of Impress the SideBar is active. Placing edit focus onto a sd TextBox activates the Properties deck and the first Content panel exposed is the *very* obvious Character panel--the same as provided in the MUFFIN Notebook Bars for several of the UI choices.

Using the Character dialog (either context menu, or the main menu Format -> Character) is a secondary work flow.

And of course this is all Direct Formatting. Discovering correct usage of Styles for the sd modules IS a little more challenging. But both workflows benefit from READIG THE MANUAL.

IMHO invalid and => WF

I started an Impress session in safe-mode to make sure I had the "Vanilla" experience.

I can confirm what V Stuart said. If you type any text and select it, the Properties panel will appear and the first section has Character formatting commands. It's hard to miss.

Maybe what you want is the same offered by MS Office, where the "popup" is a toolbar? See link below:

The "Text Formatting" toolbar was hidden for bug 87676 to have only two toolbars stacked. You can re-enable it via View > Toolbars, although your UI will become jumping.

"Text Attribute" could be changed into "Textbox Attribute" to make clear it's not about the font. However, other modules also change font via character attributes.

The "mini toolbar" thing is discussed in bug 87040.

Putting all together the situation is not perfect but plenty of alternatives exist. And like 'one for all fits none' the same applies for the opposite. Let's resolve this one as WF but monitor the bug reports to see if more users struggle.
