firefox reader mode

It feels like it would be very useful to be able to quickly toggle a "Reader Mode / View" in Writer which would automatically toggle a non editable and easier to read colour and font size mode (basically similar to Firefox reader view).

There is View-Web, did you use it?
Apart from that, may be a duplicate of bug 37967.

Thank you for your comment. Yes I have seen the web-view. This changes the layout but this request is about a mode that makes the document more pleasant / less eye straining / easier to read which changes layout but also background and font colours and size. See the firefox reader view to see what I mean.

I know you can change document background colours in LO (which I use) but this applies to all LO apps for all documents and does not change other things (like font colours and size). Plus it is kind of a hidden option whereas it would be nice to just have a button to switch reader mode on and off.

And so I also don't think it is quite a duplicate of bug 37967

Does that make sense?

Also background colour still suffers bug 38065

Not for me.
Because, see that bug 37967 is 11 years old and not resolved.
Now you have another proposal, so assume when would it be considered.
But worse, you didn't give specifics of what exactly you would want, "see FF Reader mode" is not enough.
And reverting to bug 37967, it's large but would benefit from a wrap-up where you can add what you would also like.
IMO it's better than opening a new large bug.
So, either you do as advised or wait for someone to confirm or discuss.

Sure I'm making a suggestion of a new feature, and I'm not a programmer, so yes god knows when / if it'll ever be implemented. I imagine this will mainly depends on the demand for this and capacity to implement. It is just an idea and I marked it as an enhancement.

Humm ok, sure I can describe it with more words on here but it felt clearer and more comprehensive to demonstrate it via pointing to where it is already implemented (in Firefox). But you're right I should have laid out the key changes:

I think Writer would benefit from a Reader view for people who are actually reading and reviewing documents in Writer (for example academics who read and review lots of papers). When toggling this view it would activate:

1. A darker background, less straining to the eye than the default white (say a pale yellow
2. Scaling of font size
3. Change in font colour that contrast with background in a non aggressive way (e.g. brown)
Users could choose the colour scheme and font scaling of their reader view.

Ideally you could toggle this view on and off easily with a button in the same way you toggle say track changes.

Happy to but I have read this bug report fully and it is just a different feature request, albeit also related to another view mode (a distraction free / text editor type view mode which feels quite different).

One question is whether we should enhance the web view mode with reading mode features (or abuse the mode) or introduce a new view mode (which would be orthogonal to the idea of web vs. normal mode).

But first we should discuss if such a low contrast reading mode is worth the effort. Document background and font color can be set via tools > options > application colors and the actual task is probably to just switch it per shortcut. Plus, to enable/disable some UI elements. To me it all sounds rather worth an extension.
Comment 8 Gauthier 2022-10-06 10:44:40 UTC
That makes if it can be done that way. Sounds a lot easier than creating a whole new view / function.

Would be nice to have some sort of font scaling happening too. Although for a start it'll probably be fine to leave that put as users can just scale the whole doc in the usual way (using zoom factor), but be good to find a way to implement it as it is much nicer than scaling the whole since the page width would be conserved (so you can see till the end of the lines), just the text gets bigger.

Currently background colour is affected by bug 38065 which we'd need to be mindful of.

Thanks for the suggestions :)

Just wanted to note that the more the relative contrast is decreased, it becomes more difficult to read text. So regardless of whether this is adopted or not - dark brown on light brown seems problematic to me.

Also, there may be considerations involving color-blind people here (or there may not be, I can't say).

The topic was on the agenda of the design meeting but did not receive further input. I suggest to realize this view mode / color settings combination per extension.
