Created attachment 182892 [details] Impress file that occasionally freezes when trying to save, created under LibreOffice 7.3.6.2 I have been an enthusiastic user of LibreOffice with Linux, and have been using LibreOffice for at least 8 years. I have consistently been having trouble for over several years, so over several versions of LibreOffice and of Ubuntu, when trying to save an Impress presentation file that I have already been working with. About one out of every ten attempts to save a file that I have already created and am working on, LibreOffice freezes and, after about 5 seconds, I get a warning message from Linux about whether to Quit or Wait, but waiting rarely leads to unfreezing and so I have to quit LibreOffice, often losing some of the changes I have made. This freezing occurs often enough that I find it is a serious problem. What is frustrating is it is not clear what triggers the freezing. I may save a file 5-15 times before a freezing occurs. After quitting LibreOffice and trying to continue with the editing, the freezing sometimes occurs right away or not for many saves. But what is clear is the probability of a freezing to occur increases substantially over time, the more times I save the same file during a given editing session (say 1-3 hours), the more likely LibreOffice will freeze This freezing is currently occurring with LibreOffice 7.3.6.2 and with a fully updated Ubuntu 22.04 OS (latest current version) on a computer with 16 GB of RAM and plenty of disk space free. I am using an NVIDIA 750 TI graphics card. The problem only occurs for me when saving the file. In searching the Internet, I have seen some people suggest that the problem might be related to NVIDIA drivers but I believe I have ruled that out by switching my desktop computer to use the Nouveau non-proprietary drivers and finding that the freezing still occurs (although less frequently than when I was using the NVIDIA drivers) under Xorg and under Wayland, so under both of the windowing environments that Ubuntu offers. The Impress file is of moderate size (I have attached the file), about 3.5 MB and corresponds to about 28 slides. The slides are a mix of text, images, and URL links, with some latex images added using the LibreOffice extension TexMaths 0.49. I do not use the advanced capabilities of LibreOffice like complicated slide animations, just text, images, some URLs, and some latex images. I am not able to reproduce the freezing on my older Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 3 laptop, also running the latest 7.3.6.2 version of OpenOffice and the same latest fully updated version of Ubuntu 22.04, but I also use my laptop much less than my desktop for creating a talk, mainly for displaying the .odp file. I should add that I have tried creating a completely new LibreOffice profile and this didn't help, nor did deleting and reinstalling LibreOffice.
I tried saving the file over 20 times while looking at htop and there does not seem to be memory leaking as such for soffice. Have you experienced this with 7.4 or 7.5? One way to test is using an appimage: https://www.libreoffice.org/download/appimage/ Set to NEEDINFO. Change back to UNCONFIRMED, if the problem persists. Change to RESOLVED WORKSFORME, if the problem went away.
