What do you mean with "paint can"? Please add a screenshot of that tool or add a detailed description how to access that tool.
The "paint can" seems to be the mouse pointer used when the clone tool is clicked. But pressing Esc should exit the clone tool. Can you provide more info on what you were doing when the problem happened? Maybe some steps for us to reproduce?
