Description g.stjohn 2022-12-07 22:37:34 UTC
Description:
Libre Office always crashes - i.e. coloured spinning balloon and I need to shut down and restart - when I use voice to text dictation on Macbook. This happened on my old mac, and now I have a brand new Macbook M1 using Ventura 13.0.1 and Libre Office 7.4.2.3 installed, and enocunter exactly the same problem, every time. Voice to text dictation on Libre Office / Macbook will not work.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.activate dictation in an open file (I have assigned the function to a specific key)
2.begin speaking. Voice begins translating to text for a few words to a line
3.the dreaded cloured balloon appears and spins forever more

Actual Results:
As mentioned, the dreaded cloured balloon appears. Need to shut down and restart.

Expected Results:
Voice to text should complete without program freeze

Reproducible: Always

Before Test execution…
Ran system diagnostics, see attached file: Bug152420-preTestProcessSample.txt.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.	activate dictation in an open file (I have assigned the function to a specific key)
ML:
a.	I have set up dictation through the MacOS Settings>Keyboard>Dictation.
b.	Keyboard shortcut assigned to OPTION+S.
c.	Opened blank document from the Start Centre, saved as Test01.odt

2.	begin speaking. Voice begins translating to text for a few words to a line
MJL:
a.	Dictated the following text:
Mary had a little lamb, Its fleece was white as snow,And every where that Mary went, The lamb was sure to go ;He followed her to school one day—That was against the rule,It made the children laugh and play,To see a lamb at school.
a.	Clicked at the top left of the open Writer document.
b.	Started dictation.
c.	I was able to successfully dictact the text :”Mary had a little lamb…” See Screen shot

3.the dreaded cloured balloon appears and spins forever more
MJL:
a.	In my test configuration I am running Activity Monitor, BBEdit, LibreOffice, Notes, Preview, Systems Settings, Termial and Finder.
b.	I have captured the system Activity for LibreOffice, see Bug152420-resultOfDictactionProcessActivity.png.

CONCLUSIONS:
a.	I was not able to reproduce the identified problem.
b.	Suggest capture the activity at the time the LibreOffice process failed, and your hardware Oviewview from Apple>About this Mac> More Info>System Report.
c.	STATUS OF BUG: UNCONFIRMED.

Thanks Mike
I'm unsure where I should respond to your response, so I have done so here.
I'm still getting the same issue. I've even assigned the key to the same key you have (ie OPTION +S).
There is one notable difference depending on whether the doc is old or new doc. In an old document (i.e. in a previously saved doc with text previously saved), the issue is the same as previously. In a new document, the voice to text appears to work, but there is a 15 second lag between completing the vocals and seeing the text.
When you request a system report, how should I convey that, using a screenshot? If so where do i attach a screenshot.

One Thousand Apologies for all of my techno-nincompoopery!

Graham

No worries Grahan…
I suggest the following:
1.	Shut donw all applications than what you need for the test.
2.	Start your LibreOffice, with test document you want to dictage into.
3.	Start Activity Monitor, and choose the CPU view.
4.	Search for ibreOffice
5.	Double click the LibreOffice process in Activity Monitor
6.	Click the Sample button, before dictating, and save the file.
7.	Commence dictating, and if your LibreOffice session fails, then click the sample button, and save the file.
8.	Attach both files to this bug case.

Libreoffice test file after dictation

The sample of the file when frozen after attempting dication

BTW. The test file is an existing saved file. It appears that dication works with a fresh file with no previously saved text, but in that case there is a 15 second lag between speaking and seeing text

Please copy and paste here the contents of your Help - About by clicking the copy button. This allows us to know more about your system.
Comment 10 g.stjohn 2022-12-12 14:47:53 UTC
Could you please explain where I will find the "copy" button, or how best can I convey the details about my system - i.e. on a Macbook. Do i need to redo the whole procedure?

On macOS it is found through LibreOffice - About.

Thanks. For the future, just click the button to the right of "Version Information" to get the text into your clipboard.
Comment 14 g.stjohn 2022-12-12 16:13:46 UTC
Ah, OK, thanks. While that button is obvious now, on an information dense screen, it is not an obvious button.
Comment 15 Alex Thurgood 2022-12-12 16:55:37 UTC
@g.stjohn :

I would suggest that you test the latest developer, and future 7.5, build :

https://www.libreoffice.org/download/download-libreoffice/?type=mac-aarch64&version=7.5.0&lang=en

There were some nasty macOS crashers in 7.4 (and previous), which have only recently been fixed in the 7.5 development branch.
Comment 16 Alex Thurgood 2022-12-12 17:00:37 UTC
See also bug 149605, where I had already commented that any attempt to use VoiceOver to dictate in a Writer document led to a spinning beachball situation (comments 5 and 6).
Comment 17 g.stjohn 2022-12-12 18:26:20 UTC
Dear Alex and Co

Bingo! Developer build 7.5 appears to have fixed this problem - which had plagued me for months and had driven me back to Open Office.

Thank you!

Graham
