Description Stian 2022-12-12 10:12:11 UTC
Description:
Writer hangs when opening dialogs for paragraph and character formatting. Both when opening from the top menu and from the menu-key-menu. It hangs for more than three minutes then opens the dialogs.

Opening of the 'file save as' dialog works quick.

I have tried the following :
  - resat the profile from protected mode.
  - installed Java 8 Update 351 64 bit and registered it in my Libre Office installation.
  - upgraded to Windows 10 22h2.
  - tried Libreoffice 7.4.3. The same error occured.
  - tried the latest Open Office 4 for Windows 32 bit. The same error occured.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install
2. Create new document
3. Open top-menu, formatting, character - or paragraph

Actual Results:
The product hangs.

Expected Results:
The dialogs should appear.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: Yes

Additional Info:
The error makes Writer useless.

I also tried this on a second pc.

First, if you use LO 64 bits, you must have Java 64 bits
and if you use LO 32 bits, you must have Java 32 bits.
Has Java been detected automatically by LO? (it should be, if not, what Java version + from which editor, did you install?)

Do you have this pb on a brand new file or a specific file only?

Did you install LO on a local hard disk/ssd or on network?

Could you give a try at https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/FirstSteps and indicate if you still reproduce this?

Thank you for looking into my bug : - )

My Libre Office is 64 bit. Latest stable version from December 2022.
My Java is also 64-bit. I downloaded Java and installed it on Dec. 8 2022.
I do not know if L-o detected Java automatically - as you are asking. This was not a topic during setup, and I know nothing about it. I registered Java in L-o according to a Mozilla article.
I did not install a Java editor. It is not mentioned as a requirement, and I know nothing about it.
As mentioned in my bug report, the hanging dialogs opens after some time. I now got the idea that this could be because L-o was looking for Java by search path. Java was not part of the system search path. So I added it: C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.8.0_351\bin. But it did not help.

1. Please let mye know why you ask about Java editor? I am not going to program L-o.
2. Please also let me know why you ask about Java at all? I wonder, because I assume that the two dialogs that hang are made without Java, since they represent very basic functions of the product.

I run L-o on my hdd-ssd. It is a two year old laptop.

This pb occours on both new files and old files - such that have a long history from earlier versions of L-o.

As evident from my bug report, I have allready done the relevant steps in the article. The problem still reproduces. The steps I did is the first two steps mentioned:
I now repeated the user configuration part, and it gave me trouble starting L-o. L-o works now, but with the same problems as reported.
I also repeated the Java registration. It is not clear to me if the 'bin' directory is ment to be part of the path-string. I tried both with and without, and the pb remains.

I am very surprised that Libre Office is hanging in this very common and fundamental situation: Dialogs for characters and paragraph.

So far, I have used eight ours on installation, problem solving and bug-dialog.

I meant the different "vendors" (see https://dzone.com/articles/an-overview-on-jdk-vendors).

Hi
I understand that you want me to look into what specific Java vendor I have and what other vendors exist.

3. Is my understanding correct?

Before I spend time on this, I would like you to start by telling me which Java vendor L-o requires me to use. I will then make sure I have Java from this vendor, or I will install it.

If neccessary, I am willing to spend more time on this bug, but the efforts must be constructive. As I have indicated, I have spent much time on this bug allready.

What are your comments to my questions number 1 and 2 from my previous posting?

About vendor, I would use Oracle JDK or Oracle Open JDK.

Concerning questions
"1. Please let mye know why you ask about Java editor? I am not going to program L-o."
As I said, I meant Java vendor (I didn't suppose you were going to program anything on LO)

"2. Please also let me know why you ask about Java at all? I wonder, because I assume that the two dialogs that hang are made without Java, since they represent very basic functions of the product."
because Java can be a pb sometimes and because you talked about 32 bits and 64 bits and was not sure you used the right 32/64 bits for Java parts.

You may also take a look at https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/FirstSteps but since you reproduce this in the second pc, I don't know if it'll help.

Concerning your request for me to consult your first steps article: I allready did the two first items in the article - before registering the bug. The other items seem irrelevant.

Let me know if you still think I should focus on any of the other items - number three through seven.

Concerning your reference to Oracle Jdk or Oracle Open Jdk:

4. Is the Oracle Jdk an official requirement of Libre Office?

Oracles web site for Java downloads is quite comprehensive.

5. Can you provide me with the link to the exact Java download that Libre Office 64 bit requires for my Windows 10 64 bit pc?

I allready downloaded, installed and registered Oracle Java in Libre Office. The Java settings form says 'Oracle Corporation' 1.8_351.

As mentioned in my previous posting, I was unsure if also the 'bin' director should be part of the path in the registration. The article unfortunately does not indicate this.

6. Is the 'bin' director supposed to be part of the path in the Java registration of Libre Office? As mentioned in my previous posting, I tried both with and without, but no difference.

This behaviour of Libre Office hanging for minutes and then resuming execution is very odd to me.

7. Is there anyway I can turn on error tracing and logging in Libre Office? I find no article about this.

I believe I set up everything completely and according to the articles. Our dialogue has not made me think otherwise. But if you still believe that something may be missing, I will of course check it.

Thank you for your feedback.

Since I don't have more questions, I'll put back to UNCONFIRMED + uncc myself because I'm stuck here so can't help.

Additional info:

When hanging, performance monitor reports that L-o uses no cpu and has no disk access as well as the process is in 'not responding' mode. Also, my kill works directly.

This makes me think that the problem may be that L-o waits for an external event, an interrupt from Windows.

The long hanging, which reoccurs, first made me think that Writer is scanning the file system, registry or some other data sources. But this is probably not the case, as Performance Monitor shows passivity.

Regarding the bug behavior:
I checked further and found that the page settings dialogue also hangs.
But the bullets and numbering dialogue opens fine.

I believe that the basic character of this problem makes it feasible for a product analyst to identify relevant areas in the code.

I now run 7.0.4.2 which does not have this problem on my old Win10 pc, but where the problems exist, and also appears on program start up, on my new Win10 pc. On both pc
Comment 10 Stian 2023-01-09 20:00:30 UTC
---- on both pc-s, there is no Java jre registered. Both pc-s have the latest version of Windows 10 64b and identical sub versions.

Does this still happen with 7.5?

Java should not have anything to do with those dialogs.
