Description Roy 2022-12-13 16:50:37 UTC
Description:
I installed version 7.4.3.2 on my system (Windows 10, latest patch, AMD Ryzen 7 5800x, 32 GB memory, and more than enough SSD space). I replaced the previous version that worked fine. When I launched the new version, it got hung up on the splash screen. Did that each and every time. I also cannot launch LibreOffice by double-clicking on an existing file. It opens the main window and freezes. Since this started yesterday, here is what I've done to try and get it to work.

1)Deleted user profile and relaunched. No changes in behavior.

2) Entered safe mode. The interface opens, I get the recovery options, but none of them yield any results. The interface continues to freeze each and every time when I relaunch after selecting an option.

3) Uninstalled and reinstalled version 7.4.3.2. No changes in behavior.

4) Uninstalled and installed older version (7.3.7). No changes in behavior.

5) Deleted user profile again for version 7.3.7. No changes in behavior

6) Entered safe mode in version 7.3.7. Tried all the option one at a time. No change in behavior.

7) Checked and reinstalled Java just to be safe. No change in behavior.

Is there some step or option I should be trying but henceforth have not utilized? Part of me is beginning to think either Windows hosed the installation or something is wrong in LibreOffice.

Any and all comments/suggests welcome. Thank you!

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install the latest version of LibreOffice on similar equipment
2. Watch is freeze and crash on launch.
3. Try opening an existing doc and watch the same thing happen

Actual Results:
It was a normal installation. From the very start after installing the latest version, the splash screen appears and freezes. Cannot launch any file as the interface freezes on start-up. This happens in the new version and the rollback to the previous version

Expected Results:
I expected the program to function as usual and to be able to open the application by double-clicking on a file as before.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: Yes

If working in Safe mode (the UI functions) but not otherwise, I'd suspect your display drivers. Please post the driver details (including the internal Skia Vulkan driver details).

And, suggest you bypass the Skia Vulcan vector rendering (as Safe mode does) [1] and retest. You can also check if default GDI only rendering [2] is stable.

=-ref-=
[1] Tools -> Options -> View: check enabled both Skia features
'Use Skia for all rendering' and 'Force Skia software rendering'

[2] Tools -> Options -> View: uncheck the two Skia features, and can check or not
    'Use hardware acceleration'

If UI is not opening, these setting can be adjusted directly in user profile.
Text edit the "registrymodifications.xcu" config file:

Insert, or Edit, these stanzas:
<item oor:path="/org.openoffice.Office.Common/VCL"><prop oor:name="ForceSkiaRaster" oor:op="fuse"><value>true</value></prop></item>
<item oor:path="/org.openoffice.Office.Common/VCL"><prop oor:name="UseSkia" oor:op="fuse"><value>true</value></prop></item>

Both true will result in Skia libs rendering using raster framing rather than vector. Both false will result in GDI rendering and bypassing the Skia libs for your you display card.

Okay. I went through and uninstalled everything related to LibreOffice on my system. I even cleaned out the registry.

I also uninstalled Java Runtime and cleaned out those registry entries. Then I rebooted my system.

Once up and running, I re-installed Java Runtime, and rebooted.

From there, I re-installed LibreOffice 7.3.7.2, and rebooted before launching it.

After my system rebooted, I launched LibreOffice, and it started working. I have no idea why.

Yet you claimed issue was with 7.4.3.2, the 7.3.7.2 release is EOL

Please note the program "registry" is not in the Window's registry, rather on Windows it lives in %APPDATA%\LibreOffice\4\User, which would normally be C:\Users\<yourusername>\AppData\Roaming\LibreOffice\4\User

To reset profile--delete that whole LibreOffice folder, or directly edit the registrymodifications.xcu with a text editor and adjust the stanzas noted.

A default install/load will attempt to run with Skia rendering using the Vulkan components. On launch LO will check the graphics performance, and use the Skia raster frame rendering as a fallback if any issues. Cycling through that test/fall back can appear as a freeze on launch and can be avoided by setting the rendering mode.

We are interested in the driver release (both the Windows reported, and what Vulkan libs report) as we use that to denylist troublesome graphics cards and driver pairings--effectively by-passing the graphics "testing" and fallback cycle.
