Description Eyal Rozenberg 2022-12-30 20:58:41 UTC
My documents use English as the Western LG language. However, for a while now, with LO 7.5 and then LO 7.6 nightlies, the Western LG I see on the bottom status bar, and in the font selection dialog for Western languages, is "Afrikaans (Namibia)".

I've never chosen Afrikaans. I believe somehow it gets chosen because it's the first item on the languages menu - even though LO does know that there's a default that may be different (for me it's "English (Israel)").

This doesn't happen with 7.4.3.2, but does happen with:

Version: 7.6.0.0.alpha0+ (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: ad387d5b984c6666906505d25685065f710ed55d
CPU threads: 4; OS: Linux 6.0; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3
Locale: en-IL (en_IL); UI: en-US
Comment 2 Stéphane Guillou (stragu) 2023-01-12 10:35:04 UTC
Can't reproduce with:

Version: 7.5.0.1 (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 77cd3d7ad4445740a0c6cf977992dafd8ebad8df
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 5.15; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3
Locale: en-AU (en_AU.UTF-8); UI: en-US
Calc: threaded

Nor:

Version: 7.6.0.0.alpha0+ (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 92deea6301a02f5530f17263f58402344f82013c
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 5.15; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3
Locale: en-AU (en_AU.UTF-8); UI: en-US
Calc: threaded

Does it still happen in safe mode?

Not exactly. When I start in Safe Mode, the Western language is "English (Israel)", and the RTL-CTL language is Hindi - which I never chose.

My locale info:

$ locale
LANG=en_IL
LANGUAGE=en_IL:en
LC_CTYPE="en_IL"
LC_NUMERIC="en_IL"
LC_TIME="en_IL"
LC_COLLATE="en_IL"
LC_MONETARY="en_IL"
LC_MESSAGES="en_IL"
LC_PAPER="en_IL"
LC_NAME="en_IL"
LC_ADDRESS="en_IL"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_IL"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_IL"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_IL"

So the Western language issue should be resolved with a profile reset.

Regarding the Hindi default for CTL, I can see that as well (both Linux and Windows). It has been the default for a while, bug 113298 mentions it, I can see it in OOo 3.3. Language detection is lacking on Linux (see for example bug 108151).

Maybe close this as WFM and open a new one if you believe there is a problem with Hindi as a default when using a locale that obviously should prioritise a different CTL language?

Ok, but - it's still a bug for the profile to be changed so as to assume I use Afrikaans by default.

The Hindi thing would indeed be a different bug. This one is about the Afrikaans being set as the western language.

Can you try to find steps to reproduce it from a fresh profile?
Including exactly what language settings are used in the LO options. Anything else changed appart from en-US UI and en-IL locale?

If not, the other option is to share the user profile (being careful with any personal info it might contain) but it would make it trickier to debug.

I don't think so... I don't play with my user profile, but I do play with the UI and various settings as part of my LO QA work.

Changed when I reset the profile? I'm not sure... I do think I saw a change in the button icon theme . Anything specific to check for?

I could do that, but - how can I minimize the amount of personal information I'm sharing? Can you link to somewhere explaining how to do that? I'm not familiar with the profile folder contents.

No, I meant: before seeing your bug, did you change anything language-related apart from the UI language and the locale. Trying to find steps to reproduce the issue.

Sorry, I assumed you knew more than me, seeing the many bugs you've reported! :D
Info on User Profile contents is here: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile#User_profile_content
You personal info filled into "Tools > Options > LibreOffice > User Data" should be stored in registrymodifications.xcu, like many other things (e.g. thumbnails of your recent documents).

But again, ideally, instead of sharing your user profile, you would find a way to reproduce the issue again starting from a clean profile.

Do you have an example document in which the paragraph language is English, but it shows as Afrikaans in LO 7.5 and 7.6 (and shows as English, as expected, in 7.4)?

I don't think so, but it's difficult to say, due to all of the QA work I do.

So, what about backup/, or database/, or store/ ? Do they not have any sensitive data?

Yes, the empty document you get when you start Writer :-)

Actually - you know what? I'll close this as WFM for now. If I see it again in a reproducible way, I'll reopen.
