Description brianjheisler@gmail.com 2023-01-04 17:08:46 UTC
Description:
As a consequence of bug 132050, flipping shapes horizontally/vertically is broken, resulting in several shapes being unusable in many circumstances (where their flipped dimension is stored as an odd integer). It seems that there is no way to fix this bug so, to work around it, I'm requesting that several new shapes be created, providing mirrored versions of asymmetrical shapes. *Some* flipped shapes are already present (e.g. 'Right Arrow Callout', 'Left Arrow Callout', etc.). *Some* examples of needed shapes are the horizontally and/or vertically mirrored version(s) of 'Cylinder', 'Cube', 'Lightning Bolt', 'Circular Arrow', 'S-Shaped Arrow', 'Corner Right Arrow', 'Striped Right Arrow', 'Notched Right Arrow', 'Up and Right Arrow', 'Chevron', 'Pentagon', 'Up and Right Arrow Callout', etc.

Actual Results:
New feature request.

Expected Results:
New feature request.

Reproducible: Always

I think, such additional shapes could be provided as Gallery theme by an extension.

The current set of shapes is based on the shapes used by binary MS Office format. They import and export well with MS Office binary formats. The conversion between these and OOXML preset shapes has improved over time, but has still some short comings.

Import and re-export of OOXML preset shapes to OOXML-formats (pptx e.g.) and 'ODF extended' works well.

The problem with the requested new shapes is, that they are neither MS binary format nor OOXML preset shapes, but need to use a custom geometry. That works without problem in case of ODF file format. But it has large problems in case of export to OOXML file format, especially with handles and glue points. An export to MS binary format in an editable format is not possible.

Thus such shapes will give a bad user experience for those users, who need interoperability with MS Office. Therefore I would not add such shapes to the sub-lists of the drawing toolbar or to the corresponding sub-menus.

Nevertheless I think, this is a valid enhancement request.

(issue in bug 132050 is inherited, so let's mark this as inherited)
Thanks for the suggestion, Brian. I understand the motivation with the linked bug. However, because of what Regina said (compatibility), and because of bloating of the collection, I don't think this should be available as a default.
UX/Design team, I assume this is to be closed as "won't fix" and recommended to be provided as an extension?

We better solve the issue. Providing new shapes per extension is always possible, and Regina explained why we shouldn't add it by default.
