Description ac0mputerguru 2023-01-29 13:03:44 UTC
This is a "Feature Request", not a "Bug Report". Why and how I ended up here...well, if you can't get me to a Request and not a Bug Report, I have little hope of my requests coming to fruition.

First, I found the Spell Checker to be quite a annoyance, for many reasons. As I'm spell-checking, I am constantly REQUIRED to exit the Spell Checker. Why? Because there is no place to add my own correction. If it's in the dictionary or spell checker, I have to exit and fix it manually.

Which brings up issue #2: why doesn't Writer remember where the Spell Checker dialog box was at? It ALWAYS puts it in the centre of the screen...right over the text that I'm trying to check. Which means, EVERY TIME I have to move the box to the right side of the screen to see what I'm doing. FRUSTRATING!

And then, issue #3: when I'm in the Spell Checker, the text is shown to me and I can see precisely where I need to make the manual correction. As I'm FORCED to exit the Checker dialog (just to add a word that's not in the dictionary), I'm suddenly jumped back to where I started spell checking. So then, in my 100-200 page document, I have to manually search through to find where I was just at. REALLY? Nobody else finds this silly?

So, for now, LibreOffice is off the table for my office. We'll pay the fee for MS 365, just to save all the extra work!

Since I can't directly edit my original submission, it's "If it's NOT in the dictionary or spell checker, I have to exit and fix it manually."

OK, I'm an idiot for not realizing I can directly type in the correction. It's just not as obvious as in MS Office. However, the other issues are still valid.

Screenshoots

First one enhancement request by report.

When right-click on the bad word, there is an option to 'Add to Dictionary'
When right-click on the bad word, the dialog is open just on the bad word.
You don't need to exit the spell check dialog.

And if you are happy with 365, good luck.

All your requirements are available, so not bugs to solve.
Have you taken a look at the attached screenshot?

If you have questions on how to do it.

So, when I open Spell Check, it will remember where the dialog box was at, yes?
And when I exit the Spell Check dialog, it will NOT return me to where I started the spell check, but where the check ended, yes?

If not, then my issue has not been resolved/closed.

ac0computerguru, it was demonstrated (by Miguel Ángel and yourself) that your *main* issue is actually not an issue. Words can be corrected by hand in dialog (validated with "Correct"), and words can be added to the dictionary from there too. You can even click in the document with the dialog still open (I tested on both Windows 10 and Ubuntu with LO 7.4 and 7.6) and then resume the spellcheck back in the dialog.

Given that both issues 2 and 3 are mainly *consequences* of the first issue (having to close and reopen the dialog frequently), they are now less prevalent.

However, I do agree the restoring of the position of the dialog would be useful, or at least opening it in a way that shows as much of the document as possible. Restoring the position of a dialog seems possible, at least on Windows (the Navigator behaves like that). I would recommend opening a new enhancement request dedicated to this specific issue, as focused reports are more likely to get resolved. Recycling this existing one won't help.

Regarding issue 3, a workaround is clicking in the document before closing the dialog.

I'd like to say that your tone does not encourage to participate in this conversation. Please keep in mind that much of LibreOffice only exists in large part because of the hard work of thousands of volunteers.

Thank you.
