Description Coburn Ingram 2023-03-07 19:32:17 UTC
Description:
Keyboard shortcuts for bold, italic, and underline revert to plain type at the end of a word unless a space is inserted.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Press <CTRL> and then either <I>, <B>, or <U>
2.Begin typing a single word.
3.Press the same key combination without typing a space or punctuation.

Actual Results:
The word reverts to plain text

Expected Results:
The word or portion of a word remains bold, italic, or underlined.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

Additional Info:
The end user expects the first <CTRL> combination to insert an <i> or <b> tag, and the second to insert a </i> or </b> tag, regardless of punctuation or whitespace.

I don't see that in OOo 3.3 nor in:

Version: 7.5.1.2 (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: fcbaee479e84c6cd81291587d2ee68cba099e129
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 5.15; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3
Locale: en-AU (en_AU.UTF-8); UI: en-US
Calc: threaded

Coburn, please provide the information from Help > About LibreOffice, and test in Help > Safe mode to see if the issue persists.
Have you actually tested in version 3.3 of LibreOffice?
Comment 2 Coburn Ingram 2023-07-28 15:43:41 UTC
I have not tested in 3.3 and it does not matter. I only put that because it is an old behavior that has not changed in forever.

It still persists.

This is a really, really simple problem to understand. I have seen it across all versions of LO in Linux for the last 18 years. Usually I see it with a fresh install, and so no, my user profile is not involved.

Please fix this.

Please think of it as like HTML tags or Markdown. When I hit a <CTRL> combination or switch from plain to bold or italic, I simply want it to work. I want to be able to figuratively insert a tag when I hit those keys. I want to be able to have three italic letters in the middle of a word, if I so choose. Currently the only way to do that is:

1. Type the word.
2. Type a space.
3. Manually select the letters in the middle of the word with a mouse.
4. Convert the letters to the desired font-weight.

I would like to be able to do it this way.

1. Type some letters.
2. Use a <CTRL> combination.
3. Type some more letters.
4. Use the <CTRL> combination again.
5. Finish typing the word.

I mean, people! Key combinations were in use in 1985, when I learned Lotus 1-2-3 on a text-based computer. We should have all the bugs worked out by now!

Thanks

Still can't reproduce using your steps with:

Version: 24.2.0.0.alpha0+ (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 24d0a62bd75b9a895c419aa165da648ab18f134d
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 5.15; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3
Locale: en-AU (en_AU.UTF-8); UI: en-US
Calc: threaded

Can you please test in safe mode (using Help > Restart in Safe mode) to see if it has anything to do with your configuration?

A fresh install doesn't necessarily remove your user profile.
Comment 4 Coburn Ingram 2023-07-28 18:11:10 UTC
I tried it in Safe Mode and immediately found LO to be working correctly.

You are right. Apparently this is something I did.

I withdraw this bug report.

If anyone has any ideas as to how I may have set myself up for this, I would welcome this. If not, thanks for bearing with me.

Thanks for testing and reporting back, Coburn. I'm not sure what kind of setting that is, or if it's just an unexpected quirk, sorry, but will let you know if I find out.
