It probably should have added my line of though: what if the problem isn't by the code, but SVG not scaling properly. I always considered the blurry ToTD images being caused by bug 122113, but apparently it isn't. Or it still is.. I will check this after a Master build arrives with your patch applied. So if your patch improves things on a Mac HiDPI, the root cause might different compared to what assumed at bug 122113.
