I'm not sure this should be as layout by default in Pivot table

added UX team just in case

Thanks Roman Kuznetsov for taking a look at it quickly. It appears to be the default behavior in MS office and Google sheets. It need not be the default behavior in libre office, but it would be nice if there is an option to set the format as default. It would just make the migration from other office suites to libre office. Also, there a row group collapse option in Google sheets with a boxed minus sign.

Data to generate pivot table
Comment 5 Stéphane Guillou (stragu) 2023-05-04 15:08:38 UTC
So, instead of having to double-click on the Row Field in question, then choosing Subtotals > Automatic, you would like to have it as a default when there are several row fields?
Comment 6 Yuwee 2023-05-04 15:31:53 UTC
Hi Ms. Stéphane Guillou thanks for getting back to me quickly. The short answer is yes.

The collapsible nature of groups heads and distinct coloring very useful to quickly get group counts and drill downs. I mostly work with 30 - 50 groups max and less than 5 groups most of the time. I am not the best judge of what everyone wants, so I am requesting an option to set it as default, so that I don't have to go it manually every time I create a pivot table.
It happens by default in competing commercial packages.

And I disagree with subtotals enabled by default. It can be easily done for only 5 clicks when you create the Pivot table. For example I don't need subtotals at all when I create me Pivot tables. I every time customize it by different options.

May be some option like "Save pivot table creating options" can help here, I don't know.

You are looking for the function Data > Subtotal.

You are sharing an Excel sample? And the data are not well defined for pivoting; team 1..5 should repeat across the groups A..C.

Resolving the ticket since we provide a function (Excel does too, if you prefer this application). Please reopen if something specific on the function is missing or I got your request wrong.

Too many comments at the same time... Could imagine Subtotals to be available on the Pivot wizard under options. But not sure this is satisfying for you.

@Heiko Tietze sorry for uploading excel format.

Yes. Definitely.

I uploaded the default behavior of google sheet and MS excel just for reference and point out to the collapsible nature of row groups.

The data is just dummy data I created so that I need share proprietary data on open forum. I have data that can be grouped by 4 different types of groups hierarchically.

Eike, was it ever considered to have an option in the pivot wizard to insert subtotals or is it easy to realize?
Comment 16 Yuwee 2023-05-23 07:55:53 UTC
Any update on this Eike?

We discussed the topic in the design meeting and decided to follow Romans suggestion to not enable the subtotals by default. The feature is easy to enable once you know how to do it, for sure the dialog can be improved a lot, which is discussed in other tickets. The majority of users seem to be happy with the current implementation. And in case of many groups the decision for which one a subtotal is needed should be decided manually anyway.

However, if more users request a subtotal sum by default this might be reconsidered.
