Adjust to Contour expectation sample 1

When I select Adjust to Contour, I expect the text to adjust to the contour of the object in question, be it a polygon, ellipse, or other form. Instead, the text always takes the form of a rectangle. [See attachments]

Maybe I just don't understand what Adjust to Contour is supposed to do since I can't seem to find any explanation in documentation on this feature.
