Description jim hamilton 2023-06-17 19:03:54 UTC
Description:
I was very excited to update to 7.5.3.2 to access what I believed was a robust version of Libre Writer so that I could use dark mode.. but find that Libre Writer crashes regularly. It can crash more than once a day but just today, it crashed after I went back to the latest article I am writing and crashed shortly after I started editing. Seems it might crash early in the day of first using Writer.. Not familiar with any of the other products in Office.. Otherwise, love the software!

Steps to Reproduce:
1.seems it happens after I start my day with Writer.. but likely happens most any time... More than once a day? Yes.
2. Screen freezes and then Writer crashes
3. restore brings back all documents with a 1min save feature

Actual Results:
This crash has been occurring regularly since updating to 7.5.3.2. I've looked at release notes for this and later versions and see nothing about crashes assumedly associated with dark mode.. PS Love dark mode.. Hope you find a solution soon!

Expected Results:
?

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

Additional Info:
did not try resetting my user profile.. Not willing to go into safe mode, etc..

What's your OS?
I tested your bug and inside Linux openSUSE KDE Plasma and Writer 7.5.4.1. I have no bug.
Comment 2 jim hamilton 2023-06-17 23:11:26 UTC
My OS is Windows 10 - basically always updated.
Note: I get the crash unexpectedly. It might be two days before it crashes. I've updated to LibreOffice_7.5.4_Win_x86-64 since filing this bug report and will see if there is any change.. PS I run a pretty strong computer i7 with 32gb of memory, etc. but I run it pretty hard :)

- Please share your version information copied from Help > About LibreOffice.
- If you get a dialog to send a crash report, please do that and paste the link to the crash report here.
- If you can still see the issue with 7.5.4, please also test with Skia deactivated: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/FirstSteps#Graphics-related_issues_(_Skia_)
- If the crash is gone without Skia, please share your Skia log (see instructions linked above).

Thank you!

Just had another crash on the updated LibreOffice Writer..
There is no crash report info other than the LibreOffice 7.5 Document Recovery mode.

I had hoped 7.5.4.2 would make a difference.
The version I originally reported on was 7.5.3.2

I do not have the time to sort out:
"If you can still see the issue with 7.5.4, please also test with Skia deactivated: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/FirstSteps#Graphics-related_issues_(_Skia_)
- If the crash is gone without Skia, please share your Skia log (see instructions linked above)."

You can see my UI Render above.. not sure about VLC: win as part of the

How do I deactivate Skia?
PS Recent reboot, resources use down, etc.. But I had about a dozen doc pages open.. and I few days ago managed two docs with 192 and 228 pages.. though they were not up long

Turn on the following:

Tools ▸ Options ▸ LibreOffice ▸ View ▸ Force Skia software rendering

Maybe it's a bit early to be sure, but I've not had any crashes since deactivating Skia.. So it looks good!

By the way, what did I deactivate?
What does Skia represent?
Should I care?

Thanks for everyone's help!

It appears the Libre Writer crash scenario has stopped though the deactivation of Skia.
Thanks!

Thank you Jim for testing and reporting back.

Skia is a graphics engine that can make use of GPU for rendering. Unfortunately, Skia can misbehave with various graphics card.

If you can find the time for it, could you please do the following to help us out:
- Turn "Force Skia software rendering" off again, restart LO
- Share with us the Skia log: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/FirstSteps#Graphics-related_issues_(_Skia_)

That information can help us make LO better for other users too, as we can blacklist the graphics card you are using.

Cheers!

The instructions are a bit beyond me..
Activating Skia, rebooting LO and reviewing the log as best I understand, I get C:\Users\J.Hamilton\.cache\youtube-dl
So, I don't see it
My graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 745 [Display adapter]
Comment 12 Stéphane Guillou (stragu) 2023-07-06 21:15:38 UTC
No problem.
For you, the log we are after is likely in:
C:\Users\J.Hamilton\AppData\Roaming\libreoffice\4\user\cache\skia.log
Comment 13 Julien Nabet 2023-07-07 09:17:54 UTC
Before reproducing the crash to retrieve C:\Users\J.Hamilton\AppData\Roaming\libreoffice\4\user\cache\skia.log, please make sure you got last graphic driver (+ all Windows update)
Comment 14 jim hamilton 2023-07-07 19:02:25 UTC
With forced skia disabled
Cannot find
C:\Users\J.Hamilton\AppData\Roaming\libreoffice\4\user\cache\skia.log
Instead, I find cache at
C:\Users\J.Hamilton\AppData\Roaming\libreoffice\4\cache/skia.log
