Description Duns 2023-06-19 04:18:24 UTC
Why it is not possible to split a Writer page as it is possible with Calc? What technical problems there are?
If you have a long document, splitting is absolutely useful!
Please do it, as soon as possible!

There is Window->New Window, allowing one to have as many views of the same document as needed, and you can position them side by side, or whatever you like.

The Calc's split makes no sense in Writer, because, unlike Calc (and some *text editors*), there is no way to align different parts of text in Writer: the pages may have different size, orientation, paragraphs may have different alignment, etc. The splitting functionality in Calc is only useful because it allows to have aligned view, where you have, say, same columns in two horizontally-split parts of the window.

The request is, therefore, basically not valid (requesting to implement an already available functionality, in a way that makes no sense for the specific component). Let me close it WONTFIX.

A related issue is bug 60129 - the "New Window" in unavailable in Web View.

No, I don't agree.

I don't agree at all.
Let me answer, and after that, you can close a request.
In a writer document it is not at all necessary align anything: the margin of a given document are supposed be the same, and that's enough to have a correct visualization.
But, even with a top splitter tab with some margins, and the bottom splitter tab with other margins, where would be the problem?
If pages would have “different size [???], orientation [??????], paragraphs may have different alignment" these are my business, nobody can force to use this feature, if the result would be a terrible view.
If you write a book, you have the same orientation and same margins, and a different (possible) paragraph alignment would not be a problem at all. At least I don't see where it would be.

Kate, on Linux, does it: you can split a text file, both vertically or horizontally.

This would be a very useful feature for Writer.

Now let me close it with this:
it is indeed possible, to *duplicate* the already available functionality of New Window, in a sub-window. But, unlike the *aligned* splitting, having a real difference that New Window can't provide, this one would be ~100% duplicated functionality, and as such, is not useful that much, but takes effort for implementation, and for supporting.

Huh? How *two different files side-by-side* could be the same as this *two views into the same document*?

INVALID, too: you filed bug 131876, so both this bug 155918, and bug 154483 do not obey the Bugzilla rules.
