Take a look on
Menu/Tools/Options/Language settings/Languages/Default languages in documents
Comment 2 Michael Rutland 2023-06-27 08:48:44 UTC
Hello m.a.roisv,

Thank you for the suggestion to use - Menu/Tools/Options/Language settings/Languages/Default languages in documents.

Unfortunately, you appear to have missed the text in my report, and I quote "Changing the 'Default Languages for Documents' - Western from English(USA) to English (UK) is only temporary." Therefore, I have already tried to set the default language permanently to English (UK) without success. So you have hit upon the problem area spot on!

For the reason specified above, I believe the correct current status for this bug report in Not Resolved. Therefore, please advise in layman's language, how I can best demonstrate to you that there is a real problem. N.B. I had this issue independently checked and verified, by someone far more experienced than myself in such matters, before submitting the report so as not to make a fool of myself.

Kind regards

Michael Rutland

I can't reproduce, if I change the language it is applied to new documents.

Please test with a clean profile, Menu/Help/Restart in Safe Mode
Comment 4 Michael Rutland 2023-07-03 15:02:59 UTC
Hello m.a.roisv,

As requested, I restarted LibreOffice in ‘Safe Mode’ (using the ‘Reset to factory settings' option). The 'Default Languages for Documents' - Western was displayed as ‘English(UK)’. The new blank document displayed English(UK) at the bottom of the window and the English(UK) dictionary was used for spell checking. That said, the ‘Thesaurus’ option from the ‘Tools menu was not available (greyed out) despite being shown elsewhere as available! Opening a second blank document, also displayed English(UK) at the bottom of the window. I could not find a way of returning to ‘Normal Mode’ from ‘Safe Mode’. So had to ‘Exit’ the ‘Safe Mode’.

I took several screenshots showing various language/spelling situations in support of the above comments. Please let me know if you would find a copy useful/helpful along with how to send them.

I look forward to receiving your advice and guidance on the best way forward (in layman's language please) to resolve the persistent ‘English(USA)’ language issue when using ‘Normal Mode’. Presumably, when LibreOffice is successfully set up to consistently use English(UK) language in ‘Normal Mode’, the missing ‘Thesaurus’ option mentioned above would still be applicable.

Kind regards

Michael Rutland

Reporter, are you perhaps using a custom default template? If so, the unwanted default language may be originating from said template.

The global default language setting is effective only when not overridden by a template. That is, the default language embedded in the template must be “None”.

Correction: it looks like a template’s language setting always takes precedence even if it’s “None”. In other words, the global default language setting serves no purpose when using a custom template.

Let's put this to needinfo while we wait for information about a possible custom default template.

Hello,
The ‘Correction:’ information in ‘Comment 6’ (by bintoro) was found to be most helpful.
The default Template was located and changed. Future new documents using ‘UK Language’ have been consistently available ever since.
I have therefore marked this bug as RESOLVED.
Thank you for your suggestion and help.
Kind regards

Thanks for following up. I'll change status to invalid for lack of a better one as we reserve fixed for ones that were fixed by a code change.
