When I open any existing spreadsheet, the cursor shows a symbol (pouring paint tin) instead of an arrow and right clicking cannot be achieved. How can I return cursor to an arrow pointer.

Looks like you are in "fill format mode". I am not sure why it would persist between sessions, but if you need to turn it off, got to the Styles sidebar and click on the Fill Format Mode button.
